As it says really, I have already lowered the sei 35mm with lowering springs but since taking out the rear seats and putting false floor in it now sits higher obviously from not as much weight in the back.
Now I know cutting springs is frowned upon but could I not just cut a couple coils off the compressed end as they don't do anything anyway?

I understand all that but it's not a race car even if I do thrash it everywhere, just didn't know if I'd notice the difference handling wise. So if the tighter wound coils are there for a softer ride what about if I cut a coil off the other end?

Anyone else have any input? Have heard of plenty of people that have cut springs and been fine but haven't seen it much on fiats.
I understand it would be a big difference on the front but can't see the harm in a couple coils on the rear.
On the other hand I don't want to ruin my car so I will take all advice into consideration

Ok here goes...

People are gonna hate and if Im honest in this instance im a massive hippocrit I always said that cutting springs is a massive no no.. however... recently I got the coilover kit from avo and as with you I have no rear seats.. the rear was sat way too high.. so after running around with the ass In the air I thought sod it.. spare set of springs laying around and to be honest.... I wanted to please myself... so out came the grinder... I took one coil off the 50mm springs.. around 30mm of spring height lowered the car 10-15mm at the rear... and if im honest theres not alot of difference... the ride is a little harsher now and to begin with the springs bottomed out (I have removed the bump stops) but once the rear dampers were adjusted that soon stopped... the harshness of the ride just refletcts the fact that its slightly lower

I did think alot about it before I done it though and came to the conclusion that.. although the spriings were designed for the car... after removing the weight in the rear that the springs didnt have that extra weight.. so therefore it kinda varifys what I done (in my head anyway..)

to be fair aslong as you dont get silly and cut 3 or 4 off and aslong as the springs dont drrop out of the seats with the wheel in the air then in my oppinion its fine..

the biggest problem i think youll encounter is the rear shocks bottoming out..

the choice is yours..

Thanks, that's the kind of detailed answer I was after lol. Did you cut off the bigger side or the tighter side?

i think the thing to remember with cut springs is that they must still be in there tight if the car comes off the floor and the suspension is at full extension.. Its not really considered good practice to cut springs no but if you can jack the car up at the back and the springs are still firmly in place i would say its safe so long as they aren't cut to the point of bottoming out the shocks all the time - so i would myself never cut more than a coil off and i would always use a shortened shock at the same time as at full extension they are shorter than stock ones.. As Lee says though you won't find many people owning up to having chopped springs on here but i know of several people that run them on here.

I have never ever cut a front spring and i think thats probably more controversial than cutting a rear spring.

I agree with you there about the fronts. I did once on my Clio a few years back when I was young and stupid. What a mistake that was lol

I cant agree more with this... cutting is silly... but needs must.. remember ive got shorter rear shocks and the ability to tighten the dampening.. I had a friend that died in a horrific car accident that was caused partly (imo) by the cut springs on the front..

as james said dont go silly with it and youll be fine.. if your cutting more then 2 coils then maybe its time to find a lower set of lowering springs..

cheers

Only plan to cut 1 maybe 2 full coils at the most.
Shorter rear shocks? Why do they need to be shorter?

I would always advise against spring cutting as i have seen one "go" on the back of a friends nova back in the day.

If anything get them heated and compressed slightly to make the spring "shorter"
