helo everybody.

having taken the gearbox off to change the clutch ive put it all back together and the box makes an awful noise like its slightly in gear.
im wondering whether ive adjusted the selector mechanism accidently or adjusted the gear accidently.
also the box wont go into 3rd. its a different box to the one i took off as the lever that pushes the thrust bearing was rather bent.
does anyone know where the selector should go for neutral or what the relationship between the two selectors is?
thanks.

okey doke.is there a plastic cap to take off to look into the selecter area or is it where the front selecter mechanism fits into?
was going to fit a punto 75 box but tnt somehow delivered it to the docks in felixstowe.im in warwick.its been sat there a week.

Just the alloy plate by where the reverse light switch fits (and where the gearbox to wing earth is). Tried to find you a revealing diagram, but the manual doesn't really treat the gearbox. It's said that a gearbox which is turned upside down will sometimes loose it's place, as it were.

The rear cable selects the gears. The front cable with the thread on it, moves the rear selector in and out to get sets. 1st/2nd. 3rd/4th. 5th/reverse. Adjusting the front cable will move the gearstick's centred neutral position either to the left or right.
Did you check for oil in the gearbox?

thanks for the info. the box is off a cinq as the punto box i was after hasnt turned up yet.
does anyone know what the rear selecter should be at to be in neutral. should you be able to move the front selecter to the right and left?
i think it may have been in reverse when i took the box off.

having taken the box off yesterday, the thrustbearing wasnt on properly and the pressureplate had eaten the bearing.
ive changed the box for the punto 75 box today in the pouring rain.all in,everything connected up,goes into all gears but now it wont start. it fuels, sparks, all turns over but no start.
any ideas?

thanks for the reply.didnt touch the alternator or timing belt side.i know what you mean as ive done that before when changing the cambelt.
ive also put the gearbox earth lead back on but no joy. il check the fuses as when i put the last box on (the one that ate the thrustbearing), i hadnt connected the earth lead to the cylinder head and the ecu was clicking at me when i turned the ignition on. now when i take the same earth lead off it doesnt click at me.very odd.

have checked all the fuses, they are all ok. have checked earth leads to the block and box. am goin to check the crank sensor in a min.
i wondered whether it was the starter motor bad wiring not turning the engine over fast enough but all the connections seem ok.

got the thing running, battery was a bit flat.used a starter boost to get it running.
just got to get a new speedo cable.the p75 box has an electronic cable from it,whereas the orig box had a screw in cable (still attached as i couldnt get it off).
does anyone know if the adapter to the dashboard is difficult?

ok. its the bolt at the back isnt it?il have to get a new speedo cable. thanks for your help.

hello again.
ive taken the mechanical speedo out the original box and ive given it to a bloke who repairs cables.
the new box has been fine for a few days after adjusting the clutch cable on the box.

the box now doesnt go into gear, not into 1st or 2nd. 5th is fine.
i dont understand it though as its been fine for a few days.
i was wondering whether ive put the clutch arm on correctly as its splined and i had to change the arms as the p75 box was different.
im thinking that the arm is on incorrectly. does the thrustbearing have to be all the way to the back of the box? i think the arm on the top of the box is a spline out.

any info would be great. the joys of owning a fiat.
