I'm currently saving up for a 1242 conversion :D and I've got a few questions:
What engine to go for? I've seen Punto 60, 75 and 80 I think. And 8 valve or 16 valve.
Gearbox: 5 speeder or 6?
Tuning parts? Punto engine parts (manifold...)?
Finally, what kind of price for these engines and gearbox and were is a good place to source them? (I'm in the north east)

Thanks for the help, with my little go-kart.

Was the wife's but its mine now!!

60 and 75 are 1242 8v, 80/85 is 16v.

Easiest swap is the 60 engine from a mk1 punto, there are minor differences on the 75 engine which make things a little more complicated (so I'm led to believe). The power difference from 60 to 75 comes from the 75 running a better MPI injection system, marginally higher compression ratio and possibly a slightly warmer cam (don't quote me on this last bit though!)

I have used the 60 engine, clutch (theoretically the same for cinq, 55, 60 75), throttle body lower half and spacer with cinq inlet/exhaust manifolds gearbox, mounts etc. If you can find a six speeder for sensible money, get two - (one for me as well! I can rev mine out in 5th) as apparently all you need to do to fit it is to swap over the selector mechanism on the top.

I am running an 1108 superchip, really ought to get it remapped soon, but it works fine.

Ideally, you want a good induction kit using twister or BMC carbon dynamic filter and a full supersprint decat/recat system to help out too.

What hits you most driving a 1242 cinq/sei is the extra torque - you can do everything you could before but one gear higher. Trickling around at low revs is so much easier than with an 1108.

oh, and it goes faster too - but I'm sure that's not your motivation!;):D

I'll second all that.

After looking for a suitable 1242 for over a week I discovered tthe following:

Punto 55 - 1108 8 valve SPI
Punto 60 - 1242 8 valve SPI
Punto 75 - 1242 8 valve MPI

I should be getting a punto 1242 throttle body and spacer of someone on the yahoo list. Apparently these are worth getting too so if you can, do it.
I'm running my 1242 with the bog standard 1108 chip. It took about 30 miles for it to adjust to the new engine. I'm planning to go for a proper punto 1242 superchip soon.

I'm also on the look out for a Supersprint exhaust manifold. I'm guessing it has to be a punto one though to clear the sump?
