I ve got what appears to be a rather large problem- my Cinqs developed a ridiculosly rough idle- it sounds as though its going to stall.

The fuel injection warning light comes on and stays on and the car idles so roughly its necessary to put the accelerator down to make it idle nicely...

Also it hates being floored. It reaches a point (not quite the redline) and just coughs and runs out of power.

I had a problem like this about a month ago- but it passed- i assumed it was gunk in the fuel tank that was just working its way through the system, but this is staying around and im totally lost.

Any Ideas would be greatly appreciated.

my old 899sx did the same. Definately check the MAP sensor as there may be fuel in the vacuum line which is causing problems inside the sensor. if this is the case, u'll need a new sensor (£50+ from fiat or free if you can pocket one from a scrappy).

If you do need to replace the sensor, check where the pipe for the sensor connects to. If it connects directly to the throttle body, plug this part on the throttle body and get part no: 46417610 from fiat (£3-4) to resolve the problem. The part replaces the brake vacuum connector and allows the Brake vacuum and MAP sensor pipe to connect together and will stop the MAP sensor getting petrol in it. The same part 46417610 can also be found on a 1108 intake manifold. does the same job.

Apart from that, check the connections to the ignition coils, you may have one loose connection and the car may be firing on 2 cylinders and will struggle to idle properly.

It seems like a fuel line prob to me- Ive no idea when the fuel filter was last replaced- if ever. THe idle is too erratic to be a dead spark plug

The cars fine at med revs, its poo at low and very high though.

Its happened before- and appears to come and go- especially when the car is quite low (NEARLY on Reserve) on fuel, but otherwise appears fine.

I reckon that the fuel filters shagged and its just all the crap accumulating up and blocking the fuel line...

I posted about the same problem recently (see 'Grumbly Italian'). Cleaned the sensors in the air duct (or whatever it's called) and all seemed to be fine, however this week the erratic grumbly idle has appeared again twice. The weird thing is when i first started my car this morning everything was running peachey, however before pulling off i realised id left my work stuff inside so switched off the engine and ran in to get it... i was literally 30 seconds, but when i returned to said cinq and started the engine again the grumbly erratic idle reared it's ugly head! Strange flippin car! I even bought a new air filter for the pig last week! B)

Hello, i am new on this forum, but i have the same problem since this week. I am from Holland and i drive a black Cinquecento 899 from 1993.

My fuel injection light keeps burning and it's necessairy to keep my foot on the gaspedal a bit, or else it sounds like quiting.

I had the problem a jear ago, the motor keeps running, but the pedal doesn't react when using it. I went to my FIAT dealer and they replaced a fuel dividing thing. I don't know what it was, but i do know that i paid 100 euro's for it.

Can you explain me what you mean with a MAP sensor, or where to find it?

BTW I hope my english is well enough...

Next to the ECU, there'll be a metal plate holding a sensor underneath it. It has a pipe (2-4mm width) that runs down to the manifold/throttle body. Remove the pipe from the sensor and sniff it for traces of petrol, best to do this after running the engine for a few mins. If you can smell/see petrol from the pipe connector, you've found the source of your problems.

Cheers, tried that last night- no real result (Ive got a cold!:)[xx(]) which really helps. I ythink I will get one of those valves though- as I think I did smell a bit of petrol on the line.

Little sensor on the exhaust manifold. Tells the ecu how much oxygen is in the exhaust gases. V.EXPENSIVE PART![V] I would use Fiat only part if you need to replace it as aftermarket sensors are sh*te from what pete says.

Got one spare if you want it. Just bought an intake manifold to Port and Polish. it's got one of these connectors on, Don't need a second one so it's free to a good home

I dont think so..it appears to have cleared up, its just shagged the fuel guaage though!:D

I get this problem as well but what I've found is that if you take the Lamda Sensor off and then clean it up with abit of sand paper it works like new again!(depending on the condition of the lamda sensor of course!) Mine is about 1 and a half yrs old.

I think i took i picture of it! If not, please let me know! (My exhaust was dirty from the rain and from a littlebit to much spray-oil, it is not rotting or something)You can find the picture at www.milon.nl/geo3hoek/lamda.jpg I removed it from my exhaust and cleaned it a bit, but it didn't look dirty at all. Now it's back at it's place, I hope my cinq is reborn at this point!
