I think my MAP sensor's on its way out (engine gives massive hesitation, mostly under gentle acceleration but often when just cruising along). I've checked the vacuum hose and put a new one on so I know that's not the problem. I've heard there's a way you can check the MAP sensor by disconnecting the end of the hose from the engine and sucking through it and the revs should rise. Well, I tried that and the revs stayed the same - if I sucked really really hard then the revs would occassionally blip up a little bit. However, if I blew through it I could make the revs rise.
Any ideas?

Sounds odd....I tested mine by sucking on it. Do it hard enough and you can stall the engine. Id think its knackered

Hmmm... think I'll try one more time and then I'll shove a new one in. Is it an easy job? It looks easy enough. Anything I should be particularly careful about?

nope, unplug, unbolt, bolt on new one, plug in new one.....done :)

Thanks for the replies!
I've ordered a new MAP sensor, but while I'm waiting for it to arrive I've gotta do a few long drives. When I was testing the sensor yesterday, I tried unplugging the vacuum hose at the engine end and then driving. Apart from a rough idle, the car purrs along beautifully with it disconnected! I'm tempted to drive like this until I can fit the new MAP sensor - do you think it would do any harm to the engine or give me terrible fuel economy or other bad things?
