Hi,

i've just finished squeezing a 1242 16v engine into my Cinq sporting (the photos are in the gallery).

I have a problem now in that it refuses to start.

I get a spark from the leads and fuel to the injector rail but the ecu isn't opening the injectors. The fuel system and ecu is straight out of a punto sporting.

The ECU has been reset so that it has a blank immobiliser code. I reckon it should just learn a new code from the code box.

Has anyone any ideas why it's doing this?

Any help would be greatly appreciated

Thanks

Andy

Andrew's Sei runs a Webber Alfa system - kind of a race-ready programmable ECU. I'm running standard FIAT kit - the idea being to make it like the Sei prototypes. I may give him a shout anyway though. Cheers.

The conversion set me back about £3k for everything - the list is pretty stupendous. She's now set up as follows:
Standard punto sprting engine and ecu.
20-row Serck oil cooler with ducted cold air feed and warm air outlets
Mocal oil cooler take off plate
Modified Punto engine bay loom.
Eiback -20mm springs on Koni gas adjustables.
Punto GT front disks and callipers with standard rear drums all fed through goodridge stainless hoses.
Custom exhaust downpipe into standard cinq sporting front pipe into Supersprint cinq sporting back box.
Homemade induction kit - bog standard cotton filter feeding alfa 145 induction pipes.
CNC machined crankshaft postition sensor mounting.

I did all the labour myself with a bit of help from me family. It took me TWO AND A HALF YEARS to complete! Alhtough this certainly wasn't continuous work.

You get around Andy!

Sorry to hear the beast isnt starting, I've been waiting in the results post patiently!

Good luck with the fix.

Fook! Impressive!!!

Best guess is with the ECU, if its anything like the 16F, is that once you connect a code box you must use the ECU with that specific code box otherwise it'll never work.

Try running without the codebox, do any ECU or CODE warning lights come on?

The only modification to the car bodywork that needed to be done was to bend the inside of the headlight surround back so it sits flush with the front crossmember. I've also cut a little away from the offside headlight casing so it clears the cambelt cover.

The ECU's a 18FD from a punto sporting. I had the code wiped by www.codeman.org - this should have reset it back to brand new condition soit should just accept the first code it comes across (I think, or is there some procedure that I've failed to follow?)

The code light comes on then goes off - just as it should.

Got it sorted eventually. It was me being stupid and fixing the TDC sensor too far from the crankshaft end pulley. 5 minutes of bodging and she fired up. Got a slight misfire for some reason, but I think that may be a sticky injector as #4 doesn't smell of petrol like the rest.

Cheers for all the comments and advice

How is she performing? (y) Nice job it's a very nice fit no room for shopping bags at least :D

I always loved andy's 1242 16v with 4 x 44mm Tb's but for me the insurance would be far to unreleastic but a 1242 16v running 85 BHP would be nice as I might stand a better chance of getting insursed... but thats my problem

Car looks nice well done!

It's wickedly fast - it'll be even better at the weekend once I clean the injectors out & get all four pots firing properly.

The fit is very tight - I've had to cut the offside headlight casing back loads to clear the cam pulley cover.

Insurance is not too bad at £415 with a 3k restriction - thats with no ncb as its used on another car.

whats a 3k restriction?

Hi It means you can only rev it to 3000rpm!!!!

Nah it really means it`s only insured for a maximum 0f 3000 miles a year,it cuts your policy costs right down if it`s a second car or a showcar or something :D
