Technical brake drum removal 'tool'

The only ones that I can think of are the seatbelt bolts that are easy to get at if you want some m10x1.25 (fiat uses fine pitch) pm me and I'll send a couple out. Normally I loosen hub nut and handbrake, take wheel of undo m8s tap drum with a lump of wood and pry bar (gently) and they come straight off. I loosen the hub nut as its much easier to replace shoes with hub removed.

I took mine into the garage at college and I just gave then a wack with a hammer came off fine no damage

Hi

Thanks I'll try the seat belt bolts if the two Ive found in a junk box are the wrong pitch.

I've already tried the soft face hammer and pry bar, but it has been a while since the drum was off and it shows no sign of movement.

I like your scheme with the hub to make fitting the shoes easy, I'll try it the hard way this time, aa I have the wheel off already.

Yep I used to do it the hard way (hub on) even cut a slot in a screwdriver but I can do it in minutes with this set up. Just assemble with springs off the car fit to one pin, secure, force on to other pin, hold onto while you secure it. Never tried the bolt method but I just keep taping and prying until its off

Hi

Ive never had the drum off, but need an MoT and the hand brake actuator has frozen.

Hi Guys

Thanks for all the advise.

Two normal 10mm bolts did push off the drum which was well tight on the hub center, it would have taken a lot of hammering. There was no detectable wear or debris lip on the drum but I chamfered it with a file anyway.

The bolts had an truncated cone lead in which I should have removed as they damaged the lead in of the threads on the hub for wheel locator and the drum hold on bolt so I cleaned them with a tap. I'll need to hacksaw the leading ends off both bolts.

The leading shoe had only 2-3mm of pad left so I will need to replace soon, and the actuator cleared up for the MoT with some plus gas A in situ.

So off for MoT tomorrow, factors for brake set 2nd, then back under auto, in cold later, I've a spare actuator somewhere...
