Wider Steelies for a Cinq 900

I've been driving my girfriends cinq for the last couple of weeks (she's doing more mileage in her new job so she takes the Bravo) and was wondering about the wheels...

It could do with a bit more width on the tyres for grip on those A Roads, but can't be bothered with alloys as
1) they're expensive and the car isn't and
2) they'd make an uninteresting car worth nicking.

So I was thinking, could I get a set of steel wheels from a scrap yard off say a Tipo and put some I dunno 165/175 width tyres on them.. I appreciate I would probably have to get a different profile of tyre to the original Tipo ones to give a smaller radius. The offset should be the same (all fiats are 4x98 etc. I think), but would the wider wheels be a problem..?

TIA

Barakka

If it's any help at all to you, I'm running 175/50 13's on 5.5" wide sporting alloys, no clearance probs etc. just bags of grip. You could also fit the sporting anti - roll bar to steady things out, and put some sports springs on. 175's look about as wide as you can comfortably go on 50 profile on these rims, not sure about the 900's steelies - if they are 4.5" I would imagine 165's would be a maximum. There's a link on my website below where you can try different tyre sizes to see what difference it makes to the speedo / gearing. You really don't want to gear it up with bigger profile tyres, it kills what little acceleration we already have !

Cheers Pete...

I used to have a Tipo and I think the tyres were 165/70/13R, which made me think to get a set of wheels from a scrappy and just put 165/50/13 tyres on 'em. Then the original wheel trims will still fit and it'll look bog standard <img src=icon_smile_big.gif border=0 align=middle>

Just out of interest how much difference did the Induction Kit make ? Was looking at the K&N 57i kit which i've seen for about 50, and the little 900cc unit could do with a bit of help with the initial power when setting off etc..

Cheers
Barakka

The induction kit and breather mod (I reduced the diameter of the vac pipe going into the carb with a plug drilled to 1mm) eliminated the 1108's inbuilt problem of big midrange flatspot. There's lots more torque from 1500 to 4000, but no real gains higher up.
Mine's actually built from an 899cc plenum (carb top bit) an exhaust bend and a Green filter.

The best place to ask about benefits for the 899, no disrespect to this forum, is probably the Clubcento egroup.
