Hello,

Anyone got any experience/thoughts on KYB Gas shocks (Excel-G) - they seem to be an extremely good price from www.buypartsby.co.uk (fronts £53/pair inc VAT)

I'm after some replacement shocks for a Cinq sporting (front ns shock has lost all its oil) and I want to fit lowered springs (prob Apex.) and Powerflex bushes while the suspension's stripped down. Real aim is good road performance with some reasonable behaviour on bumpy side roads rather than extreme handling. So I fancy something a bit better than standard shocks, but trying to control overall cost (and the KYBs are cheaper from buypartsby than anything else I can find)

If not KYB, suggestions please for replacement fronts.

And an associated question - If you get the full Apex kit, who makes the shock absorbers, 'cause I can't see 'Apex' shocks available separately from anywhere.

Thanks for any comments

Chris

PS I've been reading this forum on and off for months and it's been a wonderful source of Cinq knowledge, so thanks everyone so far. :)

If you intend to get lower by much, then its a good idea to get shorter shocks - as lowering springs with OEM size stocks tends to lead to them failing sooner than they should (gex had this happen, as did mase)

I've heard good things about Bilstein shocks as replacements for OEM parts. I have a full spax suspension kit, and rate that highly - the drop is a tad extreme though, and not really what you're after!

i wanted only a 20mm dorp but wanted to replace the shocks while doing the spring as have an occasional knock from front, which would i be best going for?

To check, no. For the top mount, car on axle stands, bonnet open. One person pulls up on the wheel, t'other looks for movement between top strut and inner wing. Any movement, top mount is fubar.

For the suspension bushes, use a bar as a lever, look for excess movemrent at the bushes -- there should be a little, but not overmuch.

While you're under there, look for misting at the top of the suspect strut where the rod comes through the tube underneath the front wheelarch. Misting is a sure sign that the strut has had it.
