Hi guys, please help! the other day the Cinq wouldn't start in the morning, so I took the batter out, charged it, re-fitted and still nothing, I took it to 2 places where they tested it with both a digital and analogue battery tester, both said the battery was dead(dropped a cell or something). The car did start with a push but after 30min of driving would not start on its own, so batter wasn't taking any charge I thought. So I got a shiny new Bosch Silver S4 202 S4000, put it in and still nothing!!!

Then I disconnected my amp and it started straight away!?!? I had this brand new JVC amp for about 8months now and never had a problem, all the fuses on it are ok.

Does anybody have an idea what can be the problem?

I'll be at Brooklands this Saturday so if any audio/electrical experts will be present I will be most grateful for a consult :)

Its doubtful i will be there TBH. Got far too much to finish on our team cars

I will have a think about your problem though. Nothing springs to mind instantly.

Sounds like your amp is drawing a serious amount of current. This is usually caused by shorted transistors in the output or power supply stages. Quite often caused by powering an amp with a flat or faulty battery as lower voltage causes higher current (and damage). Since your amp is under 12 months old best option is top take it back and get your supplier to test it. If the amp is faulty (more than likely) hopefully they will repair it under warranty.

Cheers

I think you may be correct. My previous battery has been on the car for over 5years now and a test confirmed it is faulty. The amp was indeed brand new in a box but purchased from ebay no no warranty there :( I determined that the amp power cable is fine, no shortages there. So now I also think the fault lies in the amp, funny thing is that is has two 20A fuses in it are fine as well as the power inline fuse?

Could this problem have been avoided if my setup included a power cap?

You quite probably still have a warranty with JVC. Sometimes you can just take it to any JVC repair agent if you can prove it's under a year old.

Might be worth giving these chaps a call:

As for the power cap, not a chance in hell I'm afraid. They are supposed to iron out voltage/current drops the battery can't handle by discharging themselves. In reality they can't do this in a car audio environment as they don't recharge quick enough or supply current/voltage for a sufficient period of time when it (or the bass) drops. The theory is sound as they are used in many electrical power supplies to smooth current and do exactly this, however in car audio it simply doesn't work and all they do is look nice and little else.

If you're really keen on car audio and you want to learn more you'll find a wealth of information and some very both friendly and knowledgeable people on this site here:

Used to be my favourite hang out many moons ago, the MO section was very special in those days LOL.

HTH Cheers

Hi, thank you very much for your help, I will give it a try to get it repaired, it is a nice amp.

This forum is just the best!! The amount of knowledge you guys got is outstanding.

Thank you very much :)
