Hi,
I've been trying to sort out my girlfriend's Seicento, the handbrake did absolutly nothing when it was pulled up when I got it...

Saturday, I adjusted the handbrake cable adjuster bolts under the car, and it seemed to work, however when I released the handbrake, one side siezed fully on...

Yesterday I got a new handbrake lever (the bit that goes from the end of the cable into the drum) and put that on, along with some new shoes... Only problem is that the new shoes are so wide (because they are new) that I had a very hard time putting the drum back on, and they won't retract back any further, so I'm stuck with them fully on...

Is there any way that I can get them to loosen off?.. I was going to try the bleed valve, but neither of the 8mm spanners I have seem to fit properly around the bleed valve. Is it 7.5mm? or 7mm? (I don't have either as a spanner, only socket).

If anyone has got any suggestions it'd be very much appreciated. The car was meant to be ready for my g/f's birthday tomorrow, but if I can't sort it myself then I will have to get someone out to look at it, and that wont be will Saturday :(

Thanks

Adam

When I did my rear brakes, the new pads needed gently tapping back into place, as they wouldn't go on there own. There should be a bit of metal at the top and bottom of the brake pads. You can normally get a little bit of wood, and gently tap these with the wood and a hammer. don't hit it hard, it really only needs gentle taps.

hope this helps

I don't need to take the springs off again do I? They were the hardest part, and I'd rather not have to strugle with them again :(

No...just give the shoes a light tapping in the centre, push them towards the centre of the hub..

i had this prob with my cinq, i replaced everyting, shoes, drums, cables, l shaped pushy thing (im tired n cant be bothered to think!) n all that was needed was to bleed ur brakes fully cus calipers shud not push out when the shoes have been removed which indicates air in ur system! :)

Thanks so far.

I can easily push the ends into the cylinder, but they do pop out again. Suppose that's air, just compressing and the expanding again?

I think I may have damaged one of the seals on one side, there's a very small hole on one side.. Suppose I'd need a new cylinder?

Thanks

hmmmm u mite be able to get away with it, if not let me know n ill get u one for £5 from work :) i like workin in a car parts shop hehehe

Ok thanks a lot. If the valve 7.5mm do you know? My 8mm spanner just slips, but it's not as if its a lot smaller than 8mm. I'm sure I've used 8mm for the front calipers.

Thanks

rears shud be same size as fronts, 7-7.5mm, maybe they been done before n rounded off, can happen! mole grips to take old ones out n pop new ones in, can get em too!

OK, well thanks a lot. I'll have to go get a smaller spanner to try. Hopefully I can get the thing unjammed tomorrow morning so my g/f can take it home with her :D

Thanks

Adam

Brake pipe spanner helps a lot when bleeding brakes!

Adamski did you adjust up the cable and get nowhere then fitted the new linkages and forgot to re-adjust the cable?

Nope, the adjusting the cable worked perfectly, it did the job.. Just that when it went on, it wouldn't come off again. I've loosened it up a but now anyway, but it's certainly not the handbrake that's holding the shoes against the drum now that I've replaced the 'lever' bit

Thanks everyone. I'll try a different spanner tomorrow (will have to go buy one)

Lets hope she appreciates this car hey or your gonna be majorly pi**ed off oh and i couldnt find a spanner in my toolbox to do rear brakes as my 8mm was too big and slipped and i couldnt get the 7mm onn so i looked in my imperial set and didnt have any around that size and dontg have half size metric spanners at all for some reson
