Hi everyone

Im a little confused with my cooling fan switch at the moment..

I have an sx with sporting clocks, therefore the temperature gauge should read 10 degrees less than the true value?

When i am driving the car the temperature sits a first thick line below 90 this is where the thermostat opens etc so this should be fine.

However my cooling fan turns on at 95C according to the gauge!

Im getting really confused! Is my thermostat opening too cool or is my cooling fan turning on too late?

Sorry if i have confused anyone else! haha

Thanks

Chris

Okay so I have a defective thermostat then, I guess it's just coincidence that I got told that and my stat opens a little to early!

you gauge reading is taken from the coolent inside the head not the temp of the rad....

95 is a good temp! if your that worried

1) Drain cooling system
2) remove thermostat
3) put thermostat in a bowl
4) place boiling water over thermostat (it should activate)
5) replace if need be
6) clean up mating surface of the engine and replace gasket
7) flush cooling system and rad
8) re-install thermostat
9) refill cooling system
10) bleed accordingly

10 easy steps :)

as above. sounds to me like your expecting the thermostat to open and the fan to kick in at the same time - thats not how it works though.. thermostat opens so the coolant can be cooled in the rad, however if sat in traffic no air passes over the rad so temps climb and when that happens the fan kicks in to draw air across the rad. So long as the fan is kicking in and your car isn't overheating or taking an age to warm up then you have nothing to worry about - sounds like its working fine from your description..

Also never heard this 10 degree thing - where did that advice come from?

Above is the link to a thread of mine where I was told about the 10 degree thing :)

thanks everyone for your comments and putting my mind at rest!
The main reason I was worried was that my fan was coming on at 105 instead but that obviously isn't the case :)
the other thing I was confused at is the thermostat I put in was rated to open at 87,does this mean it is open totally at 87? At the moment it maintains my temp at what I guess is 70 or 80 (next thick line below 90)

Thanks for your great help as always!

Chris

Do the 899's have the coolant temp sensor fitted in the inlet mani thats just not connected or do you have to fit one to connect to the gauge?
899 have the temperature sensor for the gauge on the top of the cylinder-head (front corner, belt end).
Most 899 Cinq had a temperature gauge, so have the correct sensor when the Sporting gauges are fitted.
But the 899 Cinq that only had a light only have a basic switch sensor so they need to change that sensor when the Sporting gauges are fitted.

ok so for it to work with sporting gauge you need to swap the sensor - thats what i was getting at..
Only if your 899 gauges don't have a temperature gauge.

My 899 gauges had a temperature gauge, so I didn't need to change the sensor when I fitted the Sporting gauges.
