Hi all

I believe my alternator bearing are about to give up! At cold its a really quiet whirring sound but once warm lots of clicking and grinding, again not at all loud.
This happened after i jump started a friends car (800cc matiz) although i split a bit of water on it whilst refilling my washer bottle which caused it to howl for a couple of second :(
Is there any way of temporarily fixing it as i need to take a 400 mile round trip next weekend so time is limited?
Is the 899 alternator unique to this engine or are the 1.1/1.2 similar?

Thanks for your help as always :)

Chris

Do listen carefully (long screwdriver, blunt end to ear) just to make sure that it isn't the water pump.

No quick and easy cure -- of course, on the 899, if the alternator locks up, you're likely to loose the belt and thus the water pump. No fun at all.

If you can find a local starter motor/alternator expert, they can maybe rebuild the thing on the spot.

Mine died last week, the bearings got really bad and when turning the alt by hand it was really notchy, felt like it was full of sand !

Cost £35 to have two new bearings fitted along with new brushes.

A lot cheaper than a new one !

:D

I paid £108 inc VAT for an exchange replacement just after xmas from my local motor factor.
It was about two weeks after I had to have the clutch done

Well this seems decent place to ask..

In seicento's are spi sporting alternators same as mpi ones?
They are listed as different.
Looks like the MPI got a bigger alternator than the SPI.
ePER only shows the Amps for the A/C versions and they are 70A for a SPI with A/C and 90A for an MPI with A/C, so I expect a similar difference with the non-A/C cars.
