My cinq is still poorly and I have a Rover I use for pulling my caravan. This morning I saw two DVLA enforcement trucks outside, thinking one had come to take a neighbours car away and the other to block the way, so they couldn't drive off in it, you can imagine my response when I looked out to see my Rover on the back of one of the trucks. Running out I ask why and they inform me there is no tax on the car - pointing to the windscreen I show them it is taxed until the end of September. Still not satisfied they tell me some story about me having paid by cheque and then cancelled it - I explain I have paid by cash and have the receipt to prove it. They then inform me the dealer I bought the car off cashed in the tax and never sent the tax disc back. After much wrangling and a side show for the neighbours they swung my car back down to earth. Can you believe that?????!!!! My cars have always been totally legal - I have never even had points on my licence and yet if I had been upstairs or in the kitchen I would have lost my car. I didn't even get an apology. Have any of you had a similar experience????? (n)

wow, that's complete rubbish from the DVLA bloke. The only way to cash in car tax is to surrender the tax disc - i.e. hand it over the Post Office counter! If this had been done, why would it be on your car?

Might be someone has cloned your car - another Rover with the same reg number?

oh and the truck drivers wages - the bloke who was there to impound the car's wages - the supervisor to supervise the whole thing ran smoothly wages....

Oh yeah, you're all right, let's not follow up cars without tax/MOT/insurance.

 Mistakes happen! It doesn't mean that all the above is wasted day in day out.

im sorry if your going to go to all of the trouble (and presumably all the paper work involved) in going out to impound a car, you think they'd make DAMN sure it wasn't a mistake

when they got their they should have realised there was a tax disc in the window

and why do it without speaking to the owner first? surely you should ask the owner to pay up first? makes no sense to me...

fair enough having a hard line on the (scum) who dodge tax/insurance/mot's etc but to be so hard you get the above situation is wrong..

Out of interest, are you self-employed? If not and you were told what to do day in day out and had to deal with the aforementioned scum verbally and physically attacking you (etc.) when you impound their car, would you be as good on your 1000th day than on your 1st? If day in day out you did the same thing and just did what you were told, would you continue?

I expect the answers are "yes" and "maybe, maybe not". The second question depends on your effort, how easy the internal system is and your intelligence.

ALl it needs to do I guess is pop up on the database as not being taxed (whatever error) and that's it, they maybe assumed you had a fake disc etc. Or just are so used to it they didn't check. They probably felt very dumb!

Still aggrieved about it today, so have sent a letter to the DVLA asking them to investigate it. Couldn't believe it when I looked out and saw my car on the back of the wagon - no questions asked and tax til end of September sitting in the windscreen. How many other people have had this happen and if they had of taken it away how long would of it have taken to give it back? My daughter is at school 11 miles away and I wouldn't have had any transport to collect her (as my cinq is still not well!!!!). I agree those who do brazenly break the rules should pay, but not those of us who play by the rules - I've never even had points on my licence.

Defo the DVLA. I even knew one of the guys - which made it more embarassing. Two vehicles and four guys, one took a neighbours untaxed car and the other nearly took mine. The guy who has had his car taken away has been told to pay up within 24 hours or the price 'sky-rockets', then if he doesn't cough up within 7 days it becomes 'cat food tins'. (n)

They attach under the car, like with a skip. I now have a chink in my windscreen that wasn't there before. Don't bother trying to get your keys - don't even knock to ask you any questions, they just take it. (n)

As a matter of interest how did they get your vehicle on the back of a truck without your keys surely they would of had to damage the car therefor owing you repair money

How do you think they uplift illegally parked vehicles?

the trucks themselves!!!

Yeah yeah yeah... you mean you're all dissapointed if our taxes DO do something!

What would you prfer, all the taxes we pay go into a buig pile that Mr Brown and Mrs Windsor sit on and throw at each other. Jesus, taxes pay for things folks, let it go"!
