Hi there,

I would like to change the coolant on my Fiat Seicento S 2002 as it is well below the minimum level. I have read through old posts on these forums and understand that I may need to flush out/drain the old coolant from the system before being able to refill it and then bleed it.

Can anyone please give me a bit of advice on how I go about doing this? For instance where do I drain the system from and where would the bleed valves be situated in this car model?

Also is this an easy job as I have little to no hands on experience with cars. I’d prefer to learn how to do it but if it risks screwing anything up I’d get someone else to do it and watch and learn.

Thanks in advance for any advice.

Cheers.

Remove the bottom hose and catch the coolant in a container. Only undo the reservior cap slowly a little at a time to try and reduce the 'gushiness'.

Take it to your local recycling centre, don't chuck it down the drain.

Stick hose pipe up removed hose and run water that way, then into the radiator, then in through the reservoir. You should get clean water coming through.

Refit hose and refill system with correct coolant.

There will be at least one bleed point behind the n/s (UK) headlamp. There may be another on the bulkhead carpet, but possibly not. Lift the bleed tube as high as possible and undo. The theory being that you want the air to come out at the highest point.

I do this cold, then run the engine until the thermostat opens, and switch it straight off. wait until it cools a bit, then rebleed

Cheers

What do you mean by thermostat opening?

What do you mean by thermostat opening?

The thermostat is a thermally controlled valve in the hose at the top of the engine block under the cool air hose to the filter. When the engine is cold the thermostat valve is closed to prevent coolant circulating through the radiator and means the engine should warm up faster. Which means you use less fuel. When the coolant reaches a set temperature the thermostat valve opens allowing coolant to circulate stopping the engine overheating.

Also this is an easy job. Just take your time, have plenty of buckets handy to catch all the liquid and buy a big box of disposable gloves. And don't buy the absolute cheapest tools you can find as they'll break/bend/damage stuff. Draper, Stanley or even Halfords are worth the extra and will make life more pleasant
