Ok - now this may seem like a very dumb question, but I have to ask....(now i am fairly mechanically minded), but what is a Lambda sensor? People are always talking about them, and they seem important...

Cheers....

The Lambda sensor lives in he front part of the exhaust. It senses the combustion gasses and sends information to the fuelling control to ensure that he car is running the correct mixture.

If it is working well, you don't notice it. If it fails then the ECU can't get the information so goes on to 'limp home mode', resticting revs and puts the EU light on.

hope that helps

Cheers

I took good care of mine when i got a new downpipe/cat.. the lil'bugga got 1st class bubble wraping and zip tiing out of the way  , - its on ur downpipe to your cat... Look just down from the exhaust manifold & u'll see summing that looks like a sparkplug or summat with wires hangin out of it.. thats the lil'bugga..

Would this be like an O2 sensor (nothing to do with mobile phones)?

I recall this doing a similar thing on my Corsa when I had to have it replaced when I blew it - I shorted it out fitting a radio and earthing the lead to the radio.

Costly affair, even on a 1.4 Corsa - £80 + VAT, or am I barking up the wrong tree?

A lambda is an O2 sensor;) basically it measures the stoich point of afr (or that's the excuse since it's worthless for tuning for anything other then stoich or 14.7:1 AFR:D )
