hello fello fiat people!

hmm where to start.. the story i guess..

i have had my cinq SX for a month now, and since having it i have noticed its goten loud. loud as in gear box loud. so i natrualy think... "hmm its gear box oil loss".. and i was correct! on replacing the speedo cable (that i snapped somehow while putting sporting clocks in.. rev counter yey!) i did happen to notice my CV boots dripping oil.
heh we had a old fiat panda that had the same problem and my dad fixed it somehow.

what i want to ask is,

the CV joints. in the cinq with the 899cc engine 5 speed box, are they ment to be full of grease or do they use the gear box oil?

deppending on the awnser. does the gearbox have oil seals or does the CV boot act as the oil seal?

on my cento, theres a gap on the CV boot. now if i was to replace the zip tie with a screw clip/angel clip/jubilee clip. would that fix my oil leaking problem?

i have done a search on this forum for awnsers all ready, but what comes up seem to be for the sporting 1.1.

any help on this will be great!

thanks for looking.

Hi

Remove gear box oil filler plug and stick in 'pinky', if pinky does not come out oily, walk to motor factor for oil, (or get a lift there). You will need a large sized allen key, to undo filler plug (probably).

If drive shaft boots have got oil on them there is (or was) probably oil inside them and you need to replace them...

You can get replacement gear boxes but it is wilful to destroy them.

ahh joy. so it sounds like one hell of a job. any work on the car i am going to do myself i am very technical minded on engines and gear boxes.
i have loads of gear box oil as all i was going to do was just keep topping it up till i could find a place that sold the oil seals.

it seems that they are very hard things to come by. my local car parts place can get them for the sporting but not the 889cc gear boxes.

i know its going to be a job and a half to do as i have done them in the passed on a corsa.

does not seem like this is going to be a cheep fix too. sigh story of my life lol

Hi

I'd top the box up immediately, not even run the engine...
The boots (and the bearings as necessary) can be got by post from the web dealers, some one will provide a link, the boots should not be that expensive, there may be a guide in the guides section of the fora.
There are cunning ways of pulling on the boots with out having to take the whole of the front of car apart, like droppijg them in boiling water and pulling them over a plastic washing up container, to protect them from sharp edges.
And it is not snowing...

Wet shaft gearbox's need the spider (cup bearings) removing to slide on the new cv boots complete with new bearing and seal.

If the box has been run for some time on "next to no" oil, You may have very little life left in it.

This happened to me and on replacing seals, oil etc, the gaerbox kept locking in gear after a short while of running.

i think the gear box is worn as some times i do have to dubble the clutch to shift down into 2nd. i am putting this down to that it has quite reduced oil level.

i dont think i could afford new gear box prices or be arsed to go to that extream of removeal and replaceing it to fix it.

i have just replaced the thermostat on it today so i have had the engine running, but i wedged a mop handel in pressing the clutch down so the gear box was effectivly not spinning. fixed that problem however.

for the time being i think i am just going to tighten up the ends of the CV boots and hope that by doing that it will slow the rate of speed that oil escapes from the gear box.

untill i can get the bits its not really worth me stripping it all down. guess ill just have to keep topping it up for a while :/

thaks for the help guys!

If the gear box seizes it will be scrap.
If is more 'fun' finding a used box and fitting it than having the boot kit parts posted to you. You will need to borrow a car to move the box...
The car did not need a thermostat, the box needed oil.

Noel

i get where your coming from, but the box was not engaged as the clutch was pressed down.
i know the box is on its last legs as even when it has been topped up with oil its very noisy and i do have to do the funky change when shifting down into 2nd.

its one of those thing. im the kind of guy that wants it to work perfectly. no noises, no having to do things to coax it into working...
tbh, i wish the box would totaly fubar as then deppending on how much it would cost, replace the box or just replace the whole car. or just not bother driving for a while. since i have had the car i have only been out in it 8 times and that was to go see friends.

the car spends most its life sitting on the drive leaking gear box oil.

untill one of the jobs i keep applying for goes throuhg the car would only be wasting money if i was to keep driving it without good resion.

i was hoping to find some pictures on the subject. just had a look through the haynes manual and it says nothing about drive shaft oil seals. i just hope that they will be the same as how the corsa's oil seals were.

hey guys, is this the part i need?
http://www.eurocarcare.net/drivetrain/71738383.html

please say it is. its the only one i have found so far that claims its the drive shaft seal for the 889cc engine.

i think i can get away with saveing the old outer CV boots as they are not ripped... ill see. i know my local auto factors can get them in anyhoo.

I'd not try and reuse boots, they wont be that dear.

Budget for clutch replacement as well.

I got a replacement box for mine 20k miles ago but the (old) noisy one still 'buzzes' along, synchro on 2nd not wonderful even with a properly adjusted and new clutch, 1 to 2nd needs patience, to avoid dog clutch noise.

Noel

Hi David

Loose usage of terms on my part then as I thought the 'gear engagement' devices on a synchro box, even if it is baulk ring a la Porche, or non synchro but consant mesh, were called dog clutches?

My Sei has the standard synchro box, but jars 1 to 2 unless you change real early and give all the time in the world, the box also whines like a banshee. Dragin's may be the same, he should not condem it there by.

right being as no one has answered any of my questions in my OP i will.
for any one looking for help on the CV boots on the gear box they are ment to be filled with oil. they get lubrication from the gear box oil.

if you have a leaking gater, it will possably be caused by the boot not sitting on the oil seal correctly.

on both the drive shaft gaters, the CV boots were not attached to the oil seal.
the gaters has some small pin holes in so i needed to replace them any way.

so if you have a leaking drive shaft, check this first.

i think i can get away with just replaceing the inner CV boots.. but be aware that the inner CV boots are both differnt sizes. you must get the correct ones.

Hi John

Fiat seem to vary the driveshaft at whim so we could not be sure which you would have had, necessarily.

Try link in post #10 which you dont seem to have read?

Most people replace the bearings as well, some dont, if the bearing goes it can take the box with it... A bit worrying if your boots were not secured properly...

Noel

i have scanned through it, and it did help me out with the removeing of the shaft, the bearing seems to have been replaced, its still got the paper sticker on it :/
i guess they reokaced that used the old boot and never clamped it down onto it.

heh i'll just change the boot i think.

so who wants to know how much oil there was in the box?
400ml LoL

i am making this a cheep fix. i only plan on having the car till next year, though i do like driving it.. its a lot easyer to handle than what the corsa was.

i want to replace it with a classic panda if i can find one.. cheep.. as i love to fix things up, as its something i take pride in... this deppends though.. the only thing putting me off this car is money. soon as i get a good wage i may keep it.. but i cant get rid of my love for the fiat panda.. i just think there great cars.

thanks peeps

well went and got a CV boot today. a part that maches the old cv boot in every way.
natrualy the clips that came with it was the wrong size.. as in every post i have seen they are.

anyway come to fit it on the drive shaft no problems, go to clamp it down onto the bearing.. heh just slipps off.. i was like.. "ok, wtf? " so i tryed it on in differnt positions, no luck used lots of differnt types of clamp (screw, cerclip, zip ties, large spring clamp) nothing would work.
the lip that the boot sits on is taperd.. (who the hell designed that?)

so it looks like i need a new bearing..

thing is, i have spent my last penny on the boot and new oil. so now it looks like the car is going to be stood for a while untill the job center will let me sign on again in about 2 months time.
had a job lined up as east mids airport, but as soon as all this happend with the car they didnt want to know me.

fml.
