Hi, after sourcing my girlfriend a sporting for her first car when she passed her test last year I've been feeling the need to have another for myself (I've had 5 sportings so far).
So last night we nipped over to Pompey to buy me one, now, me being me I bought a fairly rough one that I knew needed some welding, a gearbox and a battery. At least it's got a load of MOT and a couple of months tax on it
Anyway, what stood out most about it on the 159 mile journey home was that it won't rev past 3900 rpm in any gear. It just feels like on/off/on/off/on/off/on/off/on. The injector light comes on and goes off like it should when you first start it but didn't come on at all during the journey home last night despite most of it being spent at the magic 3900 rpm.
This morning I drove down to my local motor factors before going to work, when it's cold it'll rev quite happily, by the time I'd got there it wouldn't. This made me think that a new Lambda sensor would sort it.
As you can probably guess, it didn't (n)
So on the way back I stopped in again and bought a new fuel filter and a set of plugs.
Still no different(n)
I wondered if it wasn't getting enough fuel so (bearing in mind that the fault gives it a max rpm of 5000 when not under load) I took the airbox off, plugged the vacumn and held it WOT (5000rpm) and sprayed a little carb cleaner in to the TB, this brought the rpm down so it seems unlikely to me that it's an underfuelling issue.
Injector doesn't look like it's leaking.
Plugs that I took out (that had done at least 150miles with the fault) were textbook perfect colour so I'm doubting it being an overfuelling issue.
Unplugging the water temperature sensor when running picks the revs up and brings the injector light on so I'm guessing that works, can anybody provide a link to the test values for it?
The idle isn't perfectly smooth either but I'm not sure whether that's connected.
Running in the dark doesn't show any arcs from the leads.
I've leant the girlfriend my van for the day tomorrow so I've got hers to bottle swap parts from to see if I can identify what's knackered.
Coil packs maybe?
TB?
CPS?
TPS?
ATS?
???
So come on then collective FF knowledge and experience base, what are your thoughts?

Thanks in advance and for taking the time to read my ramblings,
Ian

do the cinqs have a limp home mode??

if its running on a 4 cylinders i'd say its map or tps

i have just done a headgasket on a friends mk2 punto 16v and the gasket had gone between 2-3 and that wouldn't rev over 4.5k and felt way down on power but that was cos it was basically running on 2 cylinders lol

if you dont get any joy with the map and the tps i'd do a compression test

I did wonder about limp home mode but surely that brings the injector light on?
