Hi Peeps, i am the proud owner of a Fiat Siecento sporting 1.1, on a V reg. This little car has given me no problems and has been a dream until this annoying problem apeared last week.

The annoyance is a Squeek, this is not like the usual fan belt squeel although im not sure wether the belts can make this sort of noise ?

The noise is not loud in volume, its loud in frequency like a high pitched squeek. Loudest when idleing and slowly lessening when i put revs on. and if im in a high gear at low revs it goes altogether until i come of the revs again.

It does sound like its coming from the vacinity of the alternator, has anyone else expirenced this and what did you do to resolve it ?

All help is appreciated i cant take the annoying sound any longer lol

Simple diagnostics required.

Remove alternator belt and run the car. If the noise has gone its an alternator problem, if the noise is still there, its probably the tensioner.

When was the cambelt and tensioner last changed?

Cheers

D

Thanks for your reply, the cambelt is due again in 2000 miles. Another thing i forgot to mention is that it doesnt happen as soon as i start the car, i can get up to 10 mins peace from this noice before it starts. Then is i turn my engine off and start the car the noice will be apparent right away but if i leave it for a hour or two i get another 10-15 mins peace before the noice starts up again

It will run happily for 10 to 15 mins without the alternator, providing all the other electrics are off.

Cheers

Hi

David is methodical and correct and I'd do what he asks but buy a replacement alternator belt, cam belt and cam belt tensioner, when you have the car up and inner wing plastic off it is easier to do every thing.

Alternator bearings can go and not make a lot of noise until the impellor starts to foul the casing... Before you start I'd rub petrol injector all over the alternator belt in situ, if you are luck the squeek will do away.

If the squeal does not go away empty a water pump anti squeal bottle in to the coolant (or normal brake fluid - even used- in the coolant header tank will do instead.) if the squeal goes replace the water pump with all the other things above immediatly, the seals on the pump have probably failed.

When I do the cam belt I allways replace the tensioner and water pump, bitter experience...

i has this problum to was guessin it was a bearing or somethis but mines very on and of sometimes it will go with out doing it for day then it will do it for a bit then stop anyway mine started when i acidently got the engine bay really wet droped a hose pipe then it started i was thinkin its the alternator or tentioner like them guys said :p can b a bit of a faf to sort though

cheers andy

After opening my ears around the engine bay a while i can be 99% certain ts coming from the alternator, belt tension is good but thats where the noice is apearing from
