Hi All,

I bought a 02 plate Seicento Sporting literally 2 days ago...and I love it! I had an MG ZT 2.0 before, and it was way too expensive to run and insure. I've gone from one extreme to another...huge to tiny! I love the way the seicento keeps you on your toes though...every corner sliding sideways LOL

Anyway, the tappets are insanely noisy! I've never had a small car before, and was wondering if this was normal? It had a full service including oil/filter change last June. It only has 36k miles on the clock! (bargain I thought).

Any reply would be much appreciated.

hmm..not sure what it is, but its very noisy..the tapping gets faster as the car does, if that helps...? I'm no mechanic lol We can't really tell from my friends car if it's normal, because he has an induction kit on his (viper kit) and his engine is so loud, you can't hear anything but the growl. I assume every one else's is noisy too then?

No. The rally car has almost silent tappets.

Get a cinq manual and a spenner and set of feelers and check.

They aren't, as such. The adjustment is by shim in a bucket, but by simply checking the clearances you will know whether you have a major or minor problem.

I'm really not mechanically minded - I think I'm just going to get it checked by a garage, and then fingers crossed, it is covered under my 3 month warranty if anything needs doing!

I've just been reading a previous post, and saw that some guy fixed his for £10, because the clearances weren't correct...I wish I knew how to do it!

It's well described in the Cinq Haynes manual. Easy enough job (don't forget you'll need a new rocker cover gasket and some silicon sealant).

This falls under my warranty...thankfully. So on Friday, I am driving it to the garage I bought it from who will adjust it. - Hopefully I will get the BMW 3 series courtesy car for a couple of days (y)

When I originally called the garage, they tried telling me that it is completely normal for this engine to be 'tappety', so I rang a Fiat garage in Rushden, who told me that it is not normal. They couldn't really argue with Fiat! Chin Up
