hi

not been driving over xmas and left car in garage.
check the water for some reason and it was ice
(which was a shock because my water pump is up the swanny and water leaked out until none left!!)
but the water was full with ice , i didnt start the car and left it til saturday ,i have found battery is low as the light comes on so i charged it a little fitted it and tried to turn over but it wont so i am stuck to know what could cause this?

is it the battery or because of the ice is everything still wet kind of so the engine wont start can someone help me

1. ice is gone and melted

2 battery is low but its sounds ok when i try to start but wont start engine

3 can smell exhaust smoke when i try to start (from exhaust pipe not in car or anywhere else)

need some sensible advise please soon as please :worship:

first of all... why did it not have antifreeze?

did you try start it when the water was frozen? if so the pump may of been frozen which can make the cam belt slip.

frozen water can also crack the head and block so might be worth doing a compression test.

last time i looked i had no water in there due to leak from water pump and no i didnt start it up i left it to melt but i took water cap off so it wouldnt crack engine didnt have full system of water so i should be ok with that (y)(y)

yep sparkplugs out and then get a nice ratchet and socket on the cam pulley and try and turn the engine clockwise

what wil this do ?

when i pushed it out of garage the lights seemed to brighten up

can it be cause of water in the engine from the cold ?

turning over the engine will make sure its not seized.. if there was some water left in the engine it would of expanded when it froze. you might of been lucky and popped a core plug. but just try turning the engine over first

If any water has got into the bores, then turning by hand with the plugs out will give you a chance to see it before you spin it on the starter with the plugs in and it hydraulic locks and possibly bends a rod.

I think there is coolant in the engine even if you drain down to the bottom of the water pump, the radiator ditto.

The recommended coolant should not have frozen.

The coolant will go slushy first, popping core plugs would be real unlucky with coolant.

But if you only had water in it then you may have pieces of crank case rather than an engine, buy new motor time.

If you have merely popped core plugs strip engine and replace leaking core plugs, possibly including removing gear box. Inspect the rad carefully as well, for leaks.

So turning it over the engine with a spanner is to see how things are, if it does not rotate easily (spark plugs out) you may have a problem. Running a damaged engine a >>£ mistake - it might have been repairable, before you ran it.

If it turns over normally please dont run it without coolant, best to charge battery and refit or replace water pump, bleed the system, run it up and check for leaks...

If you run it without coolant you may be replacing the head gasket afterwards.

cheers

i havent ran the ran with ice in it the pump went before the ice and snow thats why i thought not enough water in the car before this problem the car just leaked on water pump side .... i dont thinks the engine is nacked because it was tip top before all this . its just not igniting if you understand that fire isnt their the start motor and alternr are fine .. its as if the engine is wet could my engine bay be flooded from excess ice inside

cheers

I can't really undestand what you are writing, but, do you cannot guess or assume anything about what has happened inside the engine during the cold spell, you can only go forward from here and now.

So, handcrank the engine with the plugs out, if it moves smoothly, handcrank the engine with the plugs in, to ensure it still turns smoothly and has compression.

Then and only then, reattach a charged battery and see if it spins over.

If it doesn't want to start, then start looking for what is missing, in terms of air, fuel or ignition.

thanks where is the part i need to turn ?

i have battery charging now but wont put on til i have tried ur task

the car was fine apart from water pump leak before the cold weather

are their any sounds i should listen out for ?

oil light has also pop up today can this be to do with water inside anywhere ?

Hi

The oil light always comes on when you turn the key it only goes off after the engine starts or turns over a few times.

I've just re-read the thread again. In the first post you had the car turning over with the battery, so I think we can dispense with the hand cranking.

Instead, when you are ready to try starting it, take the spark plugs out and put them on a hot radiator.

When they are very hot, fit them and immediately try starting the car. The extra heat in the plugs will help and will do a whole lot less damage than cold start.

yeh car does kind of turn over just doesnt have that pow to fire up !! i would try to bump it as i live on a hill but il be fecked if it doesnt start lol

i just tried battery on car still lights dimm when i turn it over and a little broom can be hear, i can smell fuel in engine after i turn it over .

taking plug out is going to be hard as cold engine so i dont want to break plugs so what about leads off and stick on to metal to check spark ?

have a quick look at the tdc sensor i think its called m8 its on the bottom right hand side of the engine pointing right at the crank with a wire that comes up and over with the wire off the oil pump. i had these sort of symptoms a while ago. mine had a little metal nipple right at the end that had rusted and was nakered so a quick swop for my old 1 off my other engine and it flew strait over. just a little lumpy for a few seconds then good as new.
