HI,

I drive a Seicento with the 1.2 8v engine from a 2000 punto.

Ive recently had a lot of problems with my battery dying completely. Would wake up to a dead battery every morning.

I jump started the car and it jumped instantly and everything ran as normal.

I recently purchased a new battery for it and after changing the battery, my ABS, battery and intermittently my power steering lights are now on. I have no power steering at all.

I took the battery back and got a new one to have the same issue.

Can anyone shed some light on what the issue may be, alternator maybe??

Its just strange how there was never any of these lights on with the previous battery , even when dead and then jump started.

Any more info needed, just ask.

Many Thanks

Ian

Hi Rally,

The ignition light comes on and goes off. I will check the cabling again tomorrow. Ive read about dodgy earth leads, do you know where the earth leads goes to from the battery to save spending time looking?

One thing i noticed also is that the live cable that goes to my HID's has broken ie wire came out of its plug... could this be anything to do with it?

Thanks

Unlikely to be the wire from the HIDs, I presume the headlamp washers are earthed OK too.

Follow the earth lead from the battery and also check the one from gearbag to chassis.

Don't just look, remove, clean, abrade, refit, retighten and cover with grease.

Cheers

Ok little update...

My friend has borrowed a device from his dad this morning that does battery tests, alternator tests and more. Battery test came up fine and did an alternator test and it read 11.95 and test said status: Low. He said it should be 14-16 on the reading so he thinks the alternator has gone... Could the bad earth cause for this reading too?

Yes. Thats also why your power steering is inoperative it needs alternator voltage to kick in.

Ok thanks.

Excuse my stupidity but do you mean yes the earthing wire could cause this or need to replace the alternator?

Ive sourced one from a lace round the corner from me for £83 brand new but dont want to spend that if i dont need to.

Thanks

The earth problem could cause the alternator test to give a wrong reading. Where did yoy take the voltage reading from?

He took the test from the battery.

I have replaced the alternator this morning and all is back to normal! Seems it was the alternator after all. Its also solved a rough idling issue that i had noticed... sounds very sweet now.

Thanks for the help on yet another rallycinq, your a star mate.
