Question Spotlight?

Im gonna get round to fittin spotlights in my bumper eventually, but where can i wire them too? I can quite easily wire them to a new switch, which is what i want to do but is this legal. I know if i have them in they have to work, but my q is, is it legal to have the spotlights on a seperate switch instead of the main beam.

Re: Spotlight?

If I remember correctly, is a few years ago I had spots on... the spots have to be wired in, in such a way that they can only be switched on with the headlights. This was done via a relay tapped into the headlight circuit.

Re: Spotlight?

Your spotlights are meant to work on there own not off the main beam, only Chav cars have them working with the main beams, so what's your question? LOL

No but seriously the standard fitment driving lights on my integrale and previously on my 5 Turbo worked as long as the side lights were switched on, not dipped or full beam but side lights.

I don't know if you noticed on Fran's 106 Rallye the other day it has driving lamps which were never fitted to the MK1 Rallye only the XSi, I fitted those and wired them in with a kit I bought from Halfords for about 15, though i did source a proper Peugeot switch for the dash and wired it in correctly so they cam on with the side lights.

As an aside your rear fog should only come on with dipped main beam.

Aaron.

Re: Spotlight?

Jolly good. I dont particularly want to wire them to existing wiring coz i dont fancy it. lol. Ill get another switch the same as my nons and have it the other side of the steering wheel. Do i need a relay, or shall i just run it through a fuse? Maybe a stupid q.

P.S another reason i cant have them on with sidelights is coz of the red bulbs.

Re: Spotlight?

Buy the fitting kit it has all the relevant relays which you def have to fit with lights and the wiring diagram shows how to connect it all.

If you want I can help you out as I'm off the rest of the week, just give me a shout.

Aaron.

Re: Spotlight?

Actually I don't have ramps here, got some in my Dads garage in Glasgow lol, I've got a trolley jack and axle stands which you are welcome to use.

Yes Halfords, but any car shop will have it, sure its Ring who make the kit, and its not more than 15.

Re: Spotlight?

If you fit fog lamps in the front bumper they can be wired to a seperate switch, still need a relay though, and they can only be used in fog or falling snow. This is the law.

If you fit spot or driving lamps then they must extinguish when the main beams extinguish. This is the law.

They are normally wired with a switch on the earth side of the relay switching circuit so that you can have main beam on with the spot lights off.
Cheers

D

Re: Spotlight?

i fitted fog lamps a few weeks ago and there damn good and dont blind oncoming drivers but lightup the side and bottom of the road if you know what i mean

but i wired the relay up to the foglamp switch so when the front fogs are on so is the rear which really pisses of people who are behind but it stops them taigateing me

Re: Spotlight?

Why don't you just ask the garage you work at Dan they are after all an MOT station as well?

I just know from all the cars I've had with factory fitted driving lights they only come on if the side lights are switched on and remain on with dipped main beam and full beam, they can't be switched on on their own, unlike rear fogs which need the main dipped beam to be on and will not light up with side lights only.
