Technical 82 degree thermostat, keeps the car cooler!

I've had a look about to see what other cars have been suffering problems like we find on the Cinq.

I know that you can buy not only a 82 degree thermo for the R5GT but also a 75degree one which is meant for extrem cars see here http://www.bbperformancetuning.co.uk/Products/Default.asp?type=dept&DepartmentID=881 I actully have in my pocession a 75 one from my 5 days unused but not compatable with the cinq (i think) and a low temp rad switch which I may use on my Cinq.

Its also something that is sold off the shelf for VX220's as well http://www.courtenaysport.co.uk/default.htm?page=73 see here for a good little explenation as to what it does diff from standard.

theres also loads of stuff on MGB's and MINI's running 80/84/88 and no thermo's at all if you look but not really compatable with our cars as they don't run ECU's.

Aaron.

On reading the Courtenay site the thermo's they sell are from hotter climate markets, I wonder if there's such a thermo made for the Cinq. Fiat seem to be well known in Africa (UNO got strong following out there) anyone got any ideas if the Cinq/Sei was sold there or anywhere else hot?

So that's waht you do when your not with an English young women, landing planes and driving your 'Grale with a smug grin Aaron!

It gives a bit of assurance and it also makes you look a clever bas*ard that Courtenay are doing a similar mod.

I'll do this when I find out what bloody thing is making me Cinq run rough.

Oh well you know Liam, flattery will get you everywhere, you make me sound so debonaire, lol.

I always knew BB perfomance, K-tec, GT Tuning etc etc had been doing the thermo mods for years, but thought it best to check it wasn't just a specific R5GT thing and lo and behold the VX's tuners do as well. I also found a link to Ferrari Daytona's that were race prepared and had thier thermo's removed to prevent overheating and gasket failure during races but thought it had no real relvance here as they were v highly tuned to do endurance GT type races.

Hi People,

I tested my thermo this morning with a thermometer and the results are in :D The 82 thermo in the 1242 housing opened at 81-82. That will be going on the car when I get a chance. :D:D:D

David

Good work, i think mine must open about the same, you will see a considerable diff on the gauge and, except for traffic where it will inevitably get hot, much less fan action. :D

Aaron,

Your thermo unit looks like the one they sell at Halfords for a cinq 1.1, punto 1.1 + 1.2, can you remember if your push rod looked long or short (maybe compare it to the ones above in the photos?).

I will probs not get the chance to fit it until tues.

If you look in the pics in my 1st post you can see the Halfords thermo still in the housing and make out the push rod, & in the 2nd pic you can see the push rod from the Cinq housing after being removed and as you will see both are short. On replacing with the Halfords one it seated correctly in the Cinq housing.

If you know how the cooling system works then you should know that using a colder themostat or removing it completly will cause faster engine wear. When there is a heat problem and the cooling system is working as it should then the rad and/or the water pump should be upgraded;) . I've never had heat problems on my panda even though the engine is well beyond the limits of the stock cooling system which is marginal at best:p

Results of today's test runs. I'll cover all the obvious and otherwise points so people can gather if they need / want one fitting.

What it does seem to do in the turbo with the new stat is run cooler (oo, big surprise  ) Even pushing along at speed, where the temp would maybe have risen to 90'c or so it remains at about 80 - 85'c max. That's goooood for me, as the car feels sluggish if the temp gets to 90 - I'd guess the ecu holds back on stuff up there.
If the water temp stays down a bit, it will help keep the oil temp down too.

What it doesn't do is stop the temp rising in traffic queues. If this is what you want one for, it won't really do any good unless you have the radiator fan on permanently.
However, the temp does drop back to normal quicker than before once traffic moves on and you get a bit of air flow through the rad.

It seems to control a little better than the standard 'stat, maybe due to the standard one having a quite 'slow' action - you need a lot more physical movement on the Fiat stat (and hence higher water temp) to get the same flow as with the new one. The modified one will flow more water as soon as it starts to open.

May be able to make a couple of these up if anyone's interested.

Balls are intact

Just runs slightly cooler, if we could source a low temp rad fan switch we'd be complete in our mission :)

Someone mentioned a Tempra switch before, any ideas?

running colder is always a bonus, especially when u get to 90 degrees after a 10 mile drive!!!

pete: u think i should get an oil cooler for the 1242 as well? she does run about 90ish even when on the motorway!

oil cooler wouldnt do any harm for sure mase.
although when you say it hits the 90's in 10 miles is that in town?might be better looking at the colling system 1st if its on open roads

well half town and half dual carraige way, it has a alloy rad as well (not that it makes much difference) and the fan doesnt com on unless stopped in traffic so it isnt all bad.

plus dnt the 1242's run hotter than the 1108's anyway? it sits just below 90 most of the time.... is that a bit hot, even for a 1242?

Alex I always had it running those kindda temps and did have my concered tbh...

But has been bled loads of time the next stage was going to be that wetter water and the 'stat

my N/A 1108 cinq sits just under 90 usually.hoping to get a lower temp for the turbo sorted soon though :)

I'd be worried bout that my black one that i've been using the last few days rarely got much above 80 and that was very hard driving....
