Number 1 Seicento has a very dull battery warning light iluminated on the dash, assume alternator is caput:( Is this a difficult job on these cars, i.e. is access difficult, chucking it down here at the moment so cant go and check.

Number 2 Seicento has a very dull water warning light on the dash. This car does have a water leak, previous owner replaced the water pump without a squeeze of sealant:( Are these wee cars prone to water leaks from anywhere else? It seems to be from the left of the engine looking from the front of the car, but cant see any coming from the water pump area or head?

Thanks(y)

With alternators, id start by cleaning and checking the ground connections. One from battery to chassis and one from chassis to gearbox. Also check the cables going to the battery and alternator before assuming alternator or battery is dead.

Leak is most likely water pump, especially if no sealant used. If taking that off, might as well do cambelt tensioner etc at the same time. Unless you know its been done recently.

1st issue resolved, it is the core plug by the water pump that is corroded and now leaking very quickly:D Poked it with a screwdriver(y)

Top tips for core plug replacement please, not done one before. Is it as simple as pulling the old one out, cleaning up the hole and tapping the new one in?

Its quite a simple affair but I would recommend using a core plug drift it will help get it in square and not damage it, also a smig of silicon around the edge will help seal it up

let the sealant set! (an apprentice at our place didnt and ended up filling the pit with coolant when he ran up to temp... he still hasnt lived it down)

Hi

Before removing alternator and after checking all the earth strap bonding, spray WD40 into the alternator casing it may be merely the brushes have collected too much debris and 'stuck', then run engine to see if the light goes out.
If that does not work try a gentle tap with the soft end of a leather copper hammer, on the alternator casing, dont do this with engine running, unless you are brave.
The WD40 or tap may fix the brushes temporarily but you need to think about a refurb or at least an inspection, which is possible yourself. I'd not think about an ebay alt from a private source... unless you like walking.

OK, done the core plug, put it all back together and it will not start now:mad:

Any ideas please??

Should also have said it is spinning over OK, and gives a little cough every few seconds as if it wants to start??

Hi

When you turn on the ignition key before you start you should hear the petrol pump run for about 3 seconds?

The engine management light should come on and go off afer a similar interval.

The code key light ditto.

Please confirm.

Noel

Yup, pump primes and the code light then the injector light goes out.

There is no water in it yet, would this stop it starting??

Hi

Yea you need coolant in it of the correct specification for mixed metal engine.

Remove a spark plug lead & pin it close to engne metal work to see it you get a spark, I'd not hold it in hand even if you don't have heart problems. You should get fat spark.

What did you dismantle to get the core plug replaced? That may be simpler way of doing this, you did not remove the alternator pulley?.

Was only checking it started prior to filling it with coolant.

Took the alternator pulley off to get at the lower cambelt shield, I did not dismantle anything else.

Put it all back as it was, and now it does not want to start:(

did you put the alterator pully back on the correct way? as it can go on 3 ways two of them are wrong and the engine wont fire due to the write info at the wrong time due to that
