I have a 98 899sx I recently put back on the road after 2 years following a "mild restoration". I noticed the first few times I drove the car the rear shoes were binding so when I got the chance I re-adjusted the handbrake and all was well but the problem arose again and wont go away  Basically with the handbrake off it will sag down as if its half on but after a mile or so driving its alright and free rolling. But stop for a short amount of time and it will begin to bind again. Ive changed the wheel cylinders and bled them thoroughly. Ive also changed the rear shoes with an unused set for an uno 45, would this cause the problem? Could it be a problem with the servo or master cylinder? Im out of ideas, any help is appreciated! There rae short flexi pipes between the body and the arms, one of these could have failed internally, you'll see that the cylinder stays out rather than the handbrake being on.

The handbrake cable can delaminate allowing the inner cable to foul on the outer. You'll see rust on it where the inner enters the outer on the suspension arm.

Cheers for the replies!

I changed the master cylinder after the old one failed spectacularly, coming to a main crossroads the pedal went straight to the floor... Definitely a brown trouser moment for many! at least the handbrake somewhat worked!!!

Today I put yet another set of shoes with the same result, could not get the drum on. On closer inspection, i noticed the adjuster lever (where the handbrake cable goes) had completely seized solid... Plus gassed it and with gentle taps of a hammer, sorted!! (y)
