basically i want to know which backboxes are compatible with my car (seiocento Sporting 51 plate) and also what is the rule of thumb regarding the size of the circumferance of the opening, would a 4in circular end with a 14" length fit?

all replies are appreciated

There are many makes to choose from but be careful in your selection.

Seicento sporting MPI's have different size mid and rear section pipes.
From 01/2001 to 05/2001 you get 37mm front pipe size (non sporting has 38mm) and from 05/2001 to 2003 you get 35mm. This size needs checking and confirming if a system is needed.

The pipe size after the mid resonator (you have to cut here to fit just the back box)can vary depending on the manufacturer.
A Supersprint b/box needs a pipe diameter of say 40mm but the pipe size of the fitted one is 41.5 or 37mm. This means It wont be an easy fit.

Most systems are designed for the early spi models which have 37mm just after the CAT and 40mm after mid resonator.
If you want a system or silencer, Check the diameter of your pipe and confirm with the supplier the pipe size before ordering.

Here's an example:
My 2001 MPI has a Cat pipe of 43mm/front section of 37mm, So the PECO system (from spi) fitted straight on.
The 2002 MPI had a Cat pipe of 43 mm but a mid section of 35mm and a bodged on system from a non sporing. So. I had to replace the front pipe and the system to make it all match.
I chose everything from the 2001 variant (bigger bore) and decided to fit the Supersprint silencer.
It wont fit because the pipe size is 41.5mm after the resonator. (Klarius exhaust manufacturer)

right, so i assume halfords would be able to fit it? haha im useless at mechanical stuff and i haven't really got access to the underside of the car comfortably and be able to hack away at the exhaust

I'm going to recommend this lot... again, as I'm incredibly impressed with what they do for the money:

They can be bartered down to £120 to build and fit a back box for you - stainless steel, too, so you can forget about it pretty much forever.

I have posted a thread with pics. of the system they built for me.
