OK, got my new head coming then its off to get ported 'n' polished 3degree valve seats etc etc & going to fit it with a Spesso head gasket & new head bolts, so all is good!

BUT, & theres always a but.

I believe that as the car is a turbo & a hi boost at that it should run a colder plug. Done a wee bit of research into it and I think the Denso iridium as good feedback on these plugs from you guys, & IK24 looks ideal as its 2 heat ranges colder (standard IK20) and in fact is the same heat range as my integrale (1 range colder than standard) is when running higher boost, therefore higher internal engine temp!

Any one running a turbo got any thoughts on this

& I will be ordering them from the US of A as even with postage they still work out less than £30 a set or £25 combined, which I believe is a bit cheaper than in dear old Blighty, unless anyone knows different! (y)

Hi,
Not running a turbo, but would like to one day.....My experience with turbo charged engines is they need a higher temp plug, R5 turbo's will run with standard plugs, but have trouble hot starting.
As your modding the head, to gain more power, it probably means more heat generated.....

Thanks

Would be interested to know how the Denso plugs go. I'm running Champion Eon1's - same physical size / shape as the standard Cinq Eon2 but one grade colder.
As I understand it, Densos will cost you about £50 a set in the uk.

Paul, I understood if you go and fit Nitrous, a turbo or up the boost then you should go a grade colder on the plug ?

I have the EON1's in it at the moment & find them ok, if a little rough when cold but then thats the way they should be as being a colder plug take longer to heat up, but good once warm.

Paul I think, you haven't been on here long enough to know I ran heavily modified 5 turbo's for 6 years & have a great deal of knowledge on them, it as with any turbo car has to run a colder plug to overcome the greater heat created by the increase in pressure, by definition a colder plug is one which has a greater efficiency at removing heat from the engine, a hotter plug holds the heat in so in any turbo application you def want a colder plug every time as it prevents detonation which can melt the plug or worse. If you know anyone with a 5 that has hot start problems this is down do a faulty anti-peculation fan, or a faulty thermostat for the anti-perc which blows cold air drawn from inside the RHS wing onto the carb to prevent the fuel from evaporating with the heat build up you get when switching a car off. My 5 ran so well I could remove the anti-perc but you need a well set up & cool running 5 to do that.

As for import tax, I've never paid it yet on anything I've bought from the states (including plugs before), & to be honest they would still work out cheaper even if the tax man decided to add some as its seems the colder the plug the more expensive it gets as the ones I want for the Cinq & the integrale are over £50 a set here in the UK.

Oh well I'm going to go for it & see how they are.

Ahh right , I have my hot and cold the wrong way around. My sister had a 5 turbo for 5 years so that was plenty of time to get aquainted to the internals.
By a colder plug, it means one that stays cooler in a hotter environment.... am I going in the correct direction now.....

Yes, got it in one! If you read the US denso site, its very informative in describing the differences in heat range of a plug.

PS cool sister to have a 5 Turbo! My mate in London has my last 5 turbo a final year 91 H plate Tungsten grey one with a 100% reliable & proven 188bhp & 212lbs/ft torque plus too many changes to list!
