Re: turbo upgrade!

First, please don't be another who says "I'm gonna fit a Punto GT engine" then doesn't do it! You're talking thousands to have it fitted and set up right, and insurance might be just about impossible afterwards.

A Van Aaken conversion with a dump valve will cost you the thick end of 2000, check insurance etc. first though.

You could do your own turbo conversion, but only if you're good with the spanners, welders and electrickery. Think about how the exhaust is going to fit in.

Re: turbo upgrade!

Hopefully you will go through with it, are you doing it yourself? Or paying for someone to do it?

Re: turbo upgrade!

Power costs. It doesn't matter how you do it. Cheap tuning is unlikely to give you satisfactory results over a long period. If someone has spent time developing, say, a turbo conversion, that they are prepared to put their name to, then that research and deleopment has to the recouped when the product is sold, that is life.

Cheers

Re: turbo upgrade!

but because they have put there name to it they have also added loads of money on top of that to make a profit! im sure the work they do is top class! just if i can fit a turbo for half the price they are asking surely its worth looking into! but then again in the long run with the garantee they give it could be better going with them hmmm not too sure on wot to do!

Re: turbo upgrade!

Things to consider if you're fitting one yourself:

The turbo Van Aaken use on the cinqs is from a 90bhp Golf TDi. You buy one second hand, is it going to be any good? They don't last forever and cost IRO 230 to be reconditioned.

How are you going to mount the turbo?

What are you going to use for an exhaust? - You'll need a completely new front pipe.

How about the fuelling? MF2 controller with 2nd injector, plus a Fuel cut defender to stop the ecu switching off - or a pukka new programmable ecu?

Heat. They get bloody hot and you need an oil cooler. Van Aaken don't fit one as standard, but fit an oil temp gauge and you'll be running for the Mocal catalogue. My standard 1242 cinq runs to 100'c on the oil at a steady 95mph without a turbo.

...is it worth it? You could buy a faster car, say a Punto GT or coop if you have to have the pisch noise. These might be easier to insure too.

Saying that, I held off a 206 GTI in the turbo yesterday. Made me smile - and the grin factor is priceless.

And the profit pays for the rates and rent and wages and NIC and electrickery and water and sewage and then the shareholders might want a wee pay out at year end too.

Cheers

This might be a stupid question but do you get an intercooler with the Van Aaken kit?

Re: turbo upgrade!

AFAIK the low boost VAD has no intercooler as its deemed not necessary running 0.3BAR of boost, but my hi-boost turbo has a VAD intercooler as part of the kit. The hi-boost kit is no longer available from them. If your running .3BAR then the temperatures generated are probably low enough to negate it but another reason for leaving it out is any intercooler will increase lag and the whole point of the low boost kit is to get negligible lag. On any turbo car increasing the intercooler size actually increases lag as well so its never just a case of putting the biggest cooler on. The cooler on my car is smaller than the standard Renault 5 Turbo cooler if that gives you an idea of size.

As others have mentioned you pays your money you takes your chances when it comes to tuning, its generally why so many turbo cars have a bad reputation for reliability is many owners going the cheap route for it to end up being expensive to repair when it all goes wrong.

As has been mentioned the turbo is probably from a TDi, on my documents its listed as a Garrett GT15, but another alternative is the IHI turbo's which were fitted to the Lancia Y10 Turbo and probably other cars, the UNO has an IHI as well but probably bigger than the Y10 & therefore bigger than is needed.

Re: turbo upgrade!

Personally, I wouldn't have a turbo cinq as my only mode of transport if that's any indication to people.
