if the fuel pump died, the ECU would have no idea - it's not clever enough. Therefore the light wouldn't come on.

To check fuel, remove the airbox and get someone to turn the car over - you'll see fuel pool on the throttle butterfly.

If there is no fuel, check for spark, if no fuel and no spark then it's probably the crank (TDC sensor).

Have a read of the link i've posted for more info, i spent a while writting it!

When the engine is cranking the furl pump runs to pressurise the line to the fuel injector, the pressure is controlled by a blow off valve and the excess is fed back to the tank. Or in your case all over the engine, cause you disconnected the return pipe hose to the throttle bode (carb).

So the pump is ok for starting, it is doing sufficient flow to operate the blow off at about 16PSI or so.

The are two problems before the fuel gets to the butterfky,

the ECU may not be telling the injector to open
the injector may be able to open e.g. kaput or full of gum.

Smart money says that neither these is the case cause you got the little red light on the dash paned from the computer saying I'm not happy.

Normally the computer will try and get you home even on two cylinders. When you turn on the ignition the little light comes on does it go off after a few seconds?

But can you smell petrol when you crank with the air filter off. I'd prefer you to crank and then remove the air filter, there is less of a fire risk?

Two questions we need to know an answer to, to help you try two answers ----- please.

all the pipes are back on, im leaving them alone from now on,,, wise choice.....

Well done, the probability is unlikely to be both coils if neither works as that would be two synchronous faults.

The most normal fault is the crank angle sensor is kaput, and that might have put on the little red light as it failed, intermittently.

But first have you any little lights on?, Before you spend money.

You need to take off the driver side wheel inner wing plastic, and undo one (two for 889) fastener and wiggle off the crank angle sensor. Replace with known good.

P.S. Ive found the sensors fragile, don't mistreat treat like egg...
