Hi

My cinq is currently in the garage being MOT'd. It failed a few things one of them being emissions. All are fine bar than normal levels of co2. I thought it was the chip causing this so swapped it out for the std chip. It helped, but its still over.

What kind of things would cause high co2 emissions? The car has a new lambda sensor and cat in September, and has no other engine mods bar a k&n air filter.

Mechanic said it might be to do with automatic choke. Anyone any suggestions what to try?

No auto choke...the fuelling is controlled by the ECU and is metered according to ambient air pressure and temperature.

It might be giving high readings if if isnt allowed to warm up first (the ECU always throws more fuel into the engine at start up)..I think most MoT test places should do their testing at normal operating temp (~90 deg C on the Cinq / Sei)/ when the fan comes on...

But it would imply that theres not complete combustion within the engine with lots of CO2 I would think, so it may be the ignition not retarding itself sufficiently or what not...I dunno

Take it for a good old thrashing before taking it in for a MOT, get everything all nice and warmed up so it cleans out all the ****e, toke mine for a good drive for about 40 mins beofore min on friday and passed everything, also if you have the orignal air filter see if u can put that back on as a KnN airfilter lets in more air and the ecu compensates wit more fuel and so more fuel being burnt.

Hope this helps man

it could be a dodgy MAP sensor, or as Tom said, not being run at operating temperature.

do you run optimax?? that may help by providing a bigger bang and therefore reducing the CO2 emmissions (or am i talking bollux??)

lol, it may kick out some stuff as it is cleaning the engine, but from what i hear it lowers the emission.

What emissions are your cinqs doing at MOT's?

Emissions test is done at a certain temp measured by a probe in place of the dipstick or the tester observing the fan kicking in.

Do you know the actual readings Mark? How much is it over? What is your idle rpm?

Liam

im not 100% sure how over it was, apparently with the chip in there it was more than 5x over on co2. But fine on everything else. With the std chip in, it was better - he didnt say how much. The mechanic is going to have a look and another go tomorrow morning, if it fails it again - im going to have to take the car and head to stafford. Its not run out yet, but i wanted it done in st annes - but if i have to have it done in staffs, i will

ive always thought it ildes high tho..

MOT for 2003.

Engine temperature assessment by manual observation of : cooling fan cut in (Maybe with RWD cars the oil temp probe is used)

Fast Idle Test:

Engine Speed 2500 - 3000rpm - Mine 2677rpm PASS

CO must be <0.30% vol - Mine 0.00% vol PASS

HC must be <200ppm - Mine 7 ppm PASS

Lambda must be between 0.970 & 1.030 - Mine 1.006 PASS

Natural Idle Test:

Engine Speed 450 - 150 rpm - Mine 868 rpm PASS

CO must be < 0.50% vol - Mine 0.22% PASS

They usually, don't give you the sheet if it's a pass, don't know why I got this one TBH.

They are some good results there mate, you must have a healthy cinq...

I think mine has an MOT slip, i'll see if i can dig it out tomorrow, but i know it was close to failing on one....needed attention

Arc, it could be that the ecu doesn't realise the engine is warm and is enriching it for cold starts (i.e. sender u/s) - what does the temp run to on the gauge - is the stat bust too?

(btw gauge and ecu temp senders are different)

Hi,
If the ecu temp probe goes squiffy it normally sticks the injection light on and causes the engine to run fast, more so at start up. If the injection light is on it means the ecu is running in "safe mode" which normally means more fuel squirted in just in case.

Thanks
Paul T

my temp gauge doesnt work. afaik the stat is fine, as the engine gets suitably warm as does the rad.

its been poked and proded.. conclusion - faulty lambda.. h'oh im mad now

*phones other garage who did exhaust work*

Hi there folks!

I had mine MOT'd and it failed on the same thing, however we noticed a slight chuff in the join on centre piece of 'zorst,it was chuffing through a wee hole, and a load of gunky gum stuff lashed all over it stopped the chuff, and passed the test!!!

Was told the air was messing with the readings, dont know if this is of any help, but its just what happened to me!!

hope ya get it sorted soon matey!!
