Hydraulic tappets. The only permanent cure is to find a set of adjustable tappets in a scrappy -- some of the Unos, I think.

They're very dependent on the correct grade of oil -- 10-40. Flushing may help.

Cold weather will mean that the oil stays thicker for longer, which will tend to make them noisy.

When was it last serviced?

What grade oil are you using?

It would probably enjoy another one. 10-40.

You might like to try a flushing oil first (decent local factors) but follow the instructions on the tin, do not run the engine under load with flushing oil in it. Or rallycinq has posted his own recipe -- again, that needs to be followed to the letter.
