hi my girlfriend just bought her second fiat seicento its a 98 s reg sx it will flat out refuse to go into 5th gear under 40MPH and if traveling above 40 and deaccelerating as soon as it hits 40 it pops out of gear and goes into nuteral

any ideas?

other then that everything sounds fine in all gears

It is possible that the 5th gear hub is knackered, this is an 899 with wet shafts, afterall.

However, a quick check of the linkage cables too make sure they are in the right place would be a good place to start.

What do you mean by wet shafts?? How much would I be lookin at for it to go in a garage if it where to be one of those problems??

Do a search and you will find that the 899s have known oil leak problems from the inner drive shaft gaiters.

Costs depend on what the fault is, where you are in the world you are, and what type of garage you go to.

For starters, check the linkage and oil level, something you can do yourself at minimal cost.
