Hi,

I've just swapped engine and gearboxes in my 1999 Sei Sporting

Everyting is ok except a gear selection issue

For the cables i removed the back one at the balljoint and the front one with the nut which attaches to the top of the box

Comparing the old and the new box (both working) when the rear selector is moved the front (threaded part the cable attaches to) moves back and forth a few millimeters, on the newly fitted one this doen't happen

The front part can be moved the few millimeters by hand (which can't be done on the original box

I'm not sure what can be done..

Does anyone know what might have caused this?

Can the selector boxes be swapped easily?

thanks

James

Do you actually have a problem with it selecting gear?

The front one is concerned with selecting reverse only iirc. The rear one is the one that does the majority of the selecting work.

The selecting boxes on the top can be swapped but its best to have both the boxes out of the car and be working in a clean environment and have them both drained of fluid first.

I connected the cables and there is a lot of movement of the stick side to side, even in gear.

Looking in the bay it seems the front cableis not 'locked' into the rectangular piece coming from the box

I found it very difficult to line up the front cable with this piece as is moves down into the box when pressure is applied from above

I assumed that this not engaging was causing the loose stick, effectively the front cable isn't connected

At the moment i think it will only engage 3rd and fourth

I've noticed that the threaded part coming out of the box which the front cable attaches to can be moved left and right by hand a few millimeters but on the other box this happens only when the rear selector is moved

Apols for my previous post - monday morning coffee taking its time to kick in . The top one does do the selection between 1-2, 3-4, and 5-R, the rear one choses which one of the 2 options.

However I think I know which bit you're on about now, its a short lever sticking out the top of the box with the ball of the cable ball joint on it.

Below is a photo of a punto gearbox selector but they're quite similar just other way round:
NG_selector.jpg

Center of the picture is a lever arm held on by a nut, make sure that is properly seated in the correct position. Take the nut off and it should sit on a rectangular shaped lump on the shaft (note that this is a punto one and is positioned the wrong way round to the sei one). You'll also have to make sure the cable itself is held in correctly using the metal spring clip otherwise the cable can't direct the force properly.

If that still doesn't help just try moving the gearbox into a gear and looking at where the levers have gone to.

the threaded part the front leverarm sits on s where the issue is.

on the old box the rectangular part sat a few degrees off-straight when in neutral, and this is where the bracket on the cable is set to connect to it

on the new box the rectangular section won't turn far enough anti-clockwise to line up with the hole in the bracket. it moves a few millimeters back and forth but won't come far enough

the other thing is on the old box the rectangular piece could not be moved by hand, only when moving the sector back and forth. On the new box it doesn't move with the selector and only by hand

I've considered adjusting the cable so it is further back, effectively shorter but can see how that can be done

If i connect the cable and bracket to the rectangular section the gear stick is forced hard over the left and will not move further right than the mid point

Obviously i want to try and avoid removing the gearbox and it could take some time and be quite difficult where i am

Thanks
James

Try taking off the nut that holds on the rectangular section. You should then be able to see if it'll line up right. If that all looks in order then its sounds like something is amiss inside the selector mechanism.

Hmmm.

So the cable doesnt line up with the holding bracket on the gearbox? Are you sure you've got the right gearbox?

When I got a replacement box for my sei I used a later punto one, I found that the selector mechanisms were not interchangable and had to use the complete selector mechanism from my sei so that it would line up with all the right mounting points etc...

essentially yes,

with the holding bracket attached to the cable it won't line up with the box.

with the bracket attached the cable will go on but it is forcing it at its maximum 'in' position and this fixes the gearstick over to the left.

the engine and gearbox are going in a 1999 'V' sporting and came out of a 1998 'S' sporting

I feel the problem is with that part of the gearbox which the holding bracket attaches to.

Is this part contained within the selector box?

if so i believe i will try swapping those boxes over

I tried to remove the old one ealier, undid the bolts i could see, 4 i think but it didn't lift off. i didn't want to force it case i did it wrong

I'll start a new thread about selector box removal

I believe this to be sorted.

I had pushed the plunger so far down and turned it it was sitting outside the shaft,so when puled back up it wasn't engaging with anything

Hopefully this will see a functioning gearbox sometime tomorrow

Thanks
James
