Could I buy a random BMC carbon air filter (from/for any car) and go to samco, and get them to make a hose that I can fit to the filter and my sei without paying a fortune to buy the one for the sei?

If it's a one off -- and the full distance from where the filter needs to sit and the TB -- it'll cost an arm and a leg. Better to do most of the length -- and bend(s) in exhaust tubing -- stainless for looks, and just the connections in silicon.

There's a pic of one somewhere with the GSR silicon bit and a BMC on the end.

Well that works out even better as Custom Chrome can do that bit for me, and I could just steal a bit of hose from samco then. Wuld work out to half the price (hopefully).

Oh and incording to my friend (saxo owner) he says the BMC carbon kits are ****e, but I hear different?

They're OK. But the critical thing is the length and volume of the "silicon" bit. There's nothing special in the actual filter of the GSR ones.
