Transferring ECU's - red key needed?

My buddy with a '97 cinq 899 is having ECU issues and we're wondering if he got the ecu, code box and a single blue key from another car would that transplant ok into his? what he's got lined up doesn't have the red key, is that essential?

Thanks
James

they're both from the same year, his faulty one and the donor, if that makes a difference

Thanks

as long as you get the ecu changed and have the new key to swap the transponder over there will be no problem

Its only possibly an issue if the blue key looses its code and needs the red one to recode it.

At that point the McKritch chip goes in.

Cheers

mckritch chip works on 899 and 1.1 engines tried and tested and removes the coded key problem

Mate stupid solution, get an early cinq 899 ECU, they are all decoded so basically plug and play. Meaning you can keep your keys etc etc..

I have sold 2 already and got none left now, but find one from a scrappy, won't be expensive.

thanks

Re: Transferring ECU's - red key needed?

Do you have to do something in particular to make the ECU/code block forget the keys? As we've had a Sporting and two S and have never had this problem.

A fix before it happens is to have another blue key (or two) cloned (cut and coded) from the existing one, also handy if you lost one of them

I went to a Fiat dealer for the Sporting's key and they cloned an existing blue, they didn't bother with the red key at all. There are other places that do the same for far cheaper, I can't remember the name atm but they have been mentioned on here before.

Also, if you're only fitting the ecu and code block, but still using the old ignition barrel and key to turn it you might have problems with both keys being read at once, or the wrong one being read, which would mean the ECU would refuse to start the engine.

I put an uncoded ECU on mine recently (cheers Ming) and it's been great ever since.

BTW....nice to see you posting Jim. Long time no see! Moved onto something more modern now or you still got minis?

Yes the light came on and stayed on so we took the bulb out as it got a bit annoying!!

Nice mini..... We're down to one clubman estate and one mini-based kit car now (when it gets finished)!!
