Hi, i have been told by my local garage that my gear box is about to go on my Cinquecento Sporting. The gears change and engage fine, but there is a grinding/knocking sound coming from underneathe the car (especially when i am accelerating). The engine sounds noisy too (rumbling alot). Anyway, my speedometer bounces between 0 and 120mph although i may be doing less then 60mph, i never get a true reading - are these connected??? Should i be looking at anything else? I reently had 4 new tyres put on my Cinq! Help greatly appreciated...

a bouncing speedometer indicates the speedo cable is on its last legs, you need a new cable. It is a two piece one for a sporting and a one piece for an 899 you dont indicate which cinq you have

It could be the diff bearings on their way out. This causes speedo failure, but I would first inspect the cable operation. Remove fromn gearbox end and 'flick' it to ensure that it turns smoothly.

If OK, remove the instruments and drive the car a short distance watching the operation of the speedo cable to make sure it turns smoothly.

Cheers
