What are the differences between 187 A1.000 and 176 B2.000 engines on the Seicentos?

the 187 A1.000 is the newer engine. It is found in the mk2 Seicento, has multipoint fuel injection, a cam phase sensor, plastic inlet manifold, and a different belt pitch on the timign belt to the older 176 B2.000 engine. The 176 is Single Point Fuel injection, found in the Mk1 Seicento, has a metal inlet manifold and is mechnically identical to that found in the Cinquecento.

anything specific you want to know, ask :)

Well, I suppose I have the 176 B2.000 engine on my 1999 Sei Sporting. It has metal inlet manifold. I wanted to know if the alternators are the same and how much would cost such a part (an alternator). Mine has its bearing gone ( I suppose) because it's making a strange friction sound when I accelerate; so I intend to change it.
The problem is that here, in Romania, an alternator for Sei costs ~ 150 £, which seems too much. Is this the correct price or I should search for a cheaper one?

PS: The current alternator is the original one, from Magneti Marelli.

are you sure it is the alternator, and not the cam belt tensioner. that can cause a similar sound. to diagnose, simply remove the alternator belt - the car does not need it to run for a short time. if the noise goes then you can be sure it is the alternator.

In the UK, £150 is expensive for an alternator. For a second hand part, i'd be looking at paying no more than £40. And for new, £90 plus my old alternator.

Well you can get noise from the belt, the alternator bearings, the crank or cam shaft, the cam belt tensioer bearing etc...

Try parraffin (kerosine) soaked rag on the belt and the pulleys, vigirous wipe. make sure the belt is within the recommended tension range.

If you remove the alternator, and the bearing(s) are damaged, a good local machine shop may be able to strip and press in a new generic bearing, and re-assemble, or you may be able to do this yourself, though not had one of these apart myself.

you can (y) bearings are interference fit into the alloy end casings.
remove these and warm them slightly with a heat gun and they will drop out (i used to rebuild high precision robotic servo motors and this is how its done)
you can then buy new bearings to fit it. I would get some high quality rubber sealed bearings.

I never did mine as i had a spare and the bushes and commutator were wrecked (i ran it for MILES with the battery light glowing slightly)

Hi

I normally use a special tools for that, dont read further

soft faced hammer and socket sized to fit, butane torch as necessary
pull them in with length of studding and socket as above, trace of copper grease on housing.

tusk tusk

Noel

P.S. some alternators are pigs to reassemble.

I will investigate with a mechanic to see exactly if the sound comes from the alternator. I will post here the results, as soon as I know something. Thank you all for the replies.

why not just remove the belt as someone said? you can usually remove them without even loosening the alternator. just turn the engine over with a socket while pulling the belt across off the pulley on the alternator.

its about 5 mins work and costs nothing

You'll know this, but others may not, use a socket sized to fit the correct race, hit the wrong race and the bearing can fall to bits

Two reasons:
1. I don't have the knowledge to do this and I'm afraid of breaking something
2. I live down the block and the car is parked near the street, on the sidewalk (so, there's no place to fix a car in the middle of the town because everybody will look weird at me :)).

jack the car up, remove the wheel, remove the arch liner, loosen the alternator bolt, pivot alternator to remove tension from belt. remove belt. start up engine. listen for sound.

then put it all back together (y)

number 2 is a silly reason :p

Here's my "parking place"... my car first on the bottom right of the pic.

In UK is it legal to work at your car on the street?

it is legal, yes. i've done the alterantor belt with the car parked up outside my house, lying in a snow / rain filled gutter getting frozen to the bone.. my own fault for playing too long on frozen car park and shredding the belt :(

Arc, I really like how your engine compartment looks, is so clean and fresh. Can I get rid of my current air-filter and fit one like yours? What exactli do I need (excepting the new sport air filter and the air-duct pipes)? I think I need a new throttle cap, like yours in order to fit the sport air filter....

Hi

Yes you need to size the socket to just clear the housing and rest on the outer race. And I never put back a used bearing...

The other end of the housing should be on soft wood, initially.

You need a pair of sockets and studding to get them back together again.

And heat for both, allus use a butane blow lamp style torch.

Hi

Had the engine and gear box out over compartment scuttle on lifting gear, gearbox from underneath, allus pick snowy days, in public streets. If you are poor you are poor... neighbours wont complain, but dont leave an oil slick, or anti freeze...
