Technical broken key

My cousin has a seicento MPI and he literally broke the key and a part of it stayed stuck in the ignition barrel. Is there a way to remove it (haven't seen it, dunno if it's a common problem). How hard is it to replace the barell if removing the key isn't an option?

With part of the key inside it should be easy enough to remove the barrell.

Nope, get the barrel out and you should be able to knock the rest of the key out. Then use the spare.

If the key won't come out, get a new barrel and keys but remember to transfer the chips.

If you or your cousin is a member of the AA, they carry a small hardened steel tool with a shallow coarse thread around it designed for getting broken keys out of locks.

I'm sure a garage or any locksmith could get it out. If not, i'll help him change the barrell and other stuff.

We're not in the UK, and our AA sure doesn't have that tool
