Hi

i have a clonking noise in the passenger footwell when driving along is this the general sympton of the rear gearbox mount going and is it an easy diy repair. What over genereal noises can this cause as when turning left only its now making a strange friction noise as best decribing it???

Any advice greatly appreciated mot beginning of november hoping its not a major problem

The noise should come on when doing low speed say under 30 mph, also you should hear it changing gear.

This should go away once you are doing above 30 mph.

Is one of those thing, if you change it and it doesn't fix the problem. It will not cost you alot (about £10) and it will probably need changing for the coming few years.

I have replaced both the side gearbox mounting(access via front left wheel arch, need to remove wheel) and rear box mount , the rear 1 was ok but end side mount was split so i replaced them both anyway the end mount was around 34 pounds and rear 18 pounds can be difficault as u ave to line it all back up to get the bolts back in (need a trolley jack) the end mount bolt would not come out so i had to buy another bolt and washers its a bad design as the rubber block is stuck to a triangular shaped centre piece and outer bracket (can split easily),the bolt goes through the middle of this and scews into a bracket bolted to the gearbox, your problem is more likely to be the side mount which you can check if it is split by looking just above the front left wheel where the shock and coil spring is, good luck.

From that description, I really can't be sure, but a clonking in the passenger footwell, as Ming says it, can really only be the rear mount. Associated with pulling away and gearchanges. 20 minute job.

But -- also check the suspension top mount on that side. These will make sweaking noises when really buggered, an a cluncking sound on hard cornering. Easy to check -- open the bonnet, put that side of the car on axle stands and pull up on the wgheel while looking for movement at the top of the strut. Any movement, new top mount. Easy enough (see the guide on replacing shocks to do it) but need to remove shock and get some spring compressors on it.
