Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

Its been a while since Team Lloyd did any projects, so yesterday we travelled miles to pick up this little gem!

Over the winter we hope to transform this cinq into possibly the first 1.4 16v with 6 speed gearbox, not sure if anyone has done it yet, altho have heard people thinking about it!

We now have the car and a brand new 1.4 16v engine and gearbox awaiting to be joined as one!

The photos:

Thanks

Emma.

Looks a very clean car to start from!

There was a Polish one (at least) but I'm not sure whether it really had a 1.4 engine -- looked as though it may have been a 1.2.

Hope you're going for forced induction on this one!

You just can't keep away from Cinq's can you

Will it be the same conversion as the Sei or are there some other improvements planned i wonder

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

Plan is to go for a road legal track day car setup, stripped out!

Going for 15" alloys so the rare speedline 13s will need to go at some point
Looking to get coilover suspension either Avo or FK is in the price range, in fact there is alot that needs buying for this

Not going to turbo it, sorry fingers we'll leave that to someone else for now!

Of course we are going to try and improve on the sei's conversion and go a bit further with it, and try for some more power by changing a few things, of which will be revelled in due course.

I'm sure Aaron will be on later and explain more,

Emma

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

The new unused probably covered about 20miles i.e. delivery mileage 1368cc engine and 6 speed box came from a Grande Punto from a trade source, it still has its fresh delivery oil in it. We have had it now for some time and had been pondering what to do with it, had even been contemplated trying to put it in the back of a Clan Crusader, by the engineering involved was not insurmountable but would have meant a complete re-engineering of the car and that may have lost some of its heritage, and with so few around best to keep its Imp sourced mechanicals.

Then the idea of doing a Cinq evolved, therefore been watching what has been for sale for a while, ideally we were looking for something that maybe had some trick bits on it, decent suspension, bigger brakes maybe, but none appeared so the Abarth kitted Cinq idea was another angle as the Sei is an Abarth model. Taking a base car that looked good (the Abarth kit is nice) but stripping it out and making a fun track biased car for us to play with.

There's lots of ideas, but no hurry to do them, its going to be done to a budget so those 1500 competition spec KW coil-overs are ruled out. Maybe the FK or AVO stuff at a third that price is more acceptable and an easy off the shelf solution, though need to search through the forum again for pics of Rallycinqs set up as I remember it being excellent with those rear suspension set up with the rear redone to accommodate coil-overs

But things like fitting 15" rims probably keeping to Fiat rather than aftermarket as most aftermarket 15" rims are 6.5 if not 7" wide and with 6 speed box the front lock is reduced already so going much wider on wheels is a hindrance, but most manufacturer spec wheels are narrower at 6" wide and the 165/50 15 Toyo R888 track days tyres fit and mean the minimum scrubage from a 15" wheel, so could be explored as don't really want to go down any major body work changes.

Really Emma got a taste of track day driving going round Silverstone recently in her Sei, but she was introduced to the perils of trackdays, lots of stone chips, tyre wear, and the fact a car for the road feels very soft on track, whereas a stiff track suspension set up feels too compromised on road.

Engine wise it will be pretty standard, as before s/s manifold, custom exhaust, standalone management, but the differance is as we do not need to aim for keeping car looking factory, so will be retaining larger 1368 inlet manifold set up and making space for it all be removing bulk head thing, battery in boot etc so be interesting to see how much differance the correct inlet manifold set up is compared to the 1242 set up we used on the Sei.

May mean venturing onto Punto section to see how this cam timing thing works

Maybe as confidence in car builds, then some development work will happen to make it quicker, though I think a lightened Cinq with the 1368 should be quick enough to entertain.

One thing for sure is its not going to be a quick build, just take our time and maybe we will have something for next years trackday season.

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

no one new a lot about that cam thing in punto section, i got rid it comes out to far for the mount in my car too.
the inlet manifold studs are in a slightly different place to the other 1.2 ones so good job you using the 1.4 manifold.
you keeping the flaps? i left mine stuck open and took the lump out middle of inlet ports on the head too

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

TBH Dave not sure what we are doing yet, the engine is quiet different from the Stilo engine we used in the Sei, and it also different to the engine in Emma's Dad's 500, so 3 1368 and all different. But yes its looks like it would be buried in side the headlamp of the Cinq, so it will be going, but how we do that yet not sure, if we just make a plate to block off the oil way in top of head what is default cam position, i.e. is it the start up cam position, the cruising position, some other position, how much does it actually do

I think we will probably take it apart see how things work and then take it from there, but anything you wish to add please do

Oh fly by wire throttle will be going, not sure what kind we will use this time probably Rover again

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

oldschool took my one to bits and reckoned it was possible for it to move out of position all on its own if it had no oil pressure in it.

problem is that it is sleeved for oil return so you cant just stick a normal one on the end, you would need to weld a sleeve onto the normal one (may work) or find another way, just fitting a bigger oil seal didn't work thats why i have a 1.2 carrier and cams on mine atm until i find some stilo ones

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

Never seen one, but, how big is the impingement?

I think you could gain 4" or more simply by ditching the headlights and fitting aftermarket ones, rather like Rallcinq. Make it look like a mini Integrale!

Pics would be super cool!

Re: Cinq Abarth Project 1.4 16v

I also have a punto grande engine sitting about

I will be swapping all of the inlet with an older 1.4 1368cc though, and also swapping the cams and head extension.

I haven't pulled the head of the grande apart yet, but i think its going to be a bit different. It may be possible to just lock the variable cam timing and just disable it.

I'll be stripping mine down in about 6 weeks after i have finished my training at work, when im doing another engine swap, so if you want any pics or have any questions, just shout

Nics looking car btw I was considering something very similar

It doesn't fit on the plastic manifold very well, if you just bolt it on like i did. Sure you can make up another tasty adapter though
