HI
AM HAVING PROBLEMS WITH ,95 CINQUECENTO SX HYDRAULIC TAPPETS. THE ENGINE HAS RECENTLY BEGUN TO SOUND VERY "TAPPETY" AND HAS BEEN LOSING POWER. IT`S A STANDARD OHV 899CC ENGINE. IN HAYNES MANUAL IT SAYS THAT THE TAPPETS ARE ADJUSTABLE BUT, HAVING TAKEN IT TO A LOCAL GARAGE, THEY SAY THAT THE TAPPETS ARE OF AN UNADJUSTABLE TYPE! I HAVENT FOUND ANY MENTION OF THIS VARIATION - ANYONE GOT ANY IDEAS/INFO???

Apparently, an 'italian tune up' aka thrashing the ******** off it for a bit, can help. Otherwise, try a flushing oil then an oil change with new filter. Failing that, you'll need to resort to dismantling and cleaning them - but if a garage is doing it then it'd probably be cheaper to just have all 8 changed.

BTW, cool choice of car, welcome to the Fiat Forum!!:)

Pete.

Hi there,

If you want you can convert your cinq back to the old type tappets just go to a breakers yard and get a rocker shaft out of a 903cc panda or uno and and fit it to your cinq and adjust the tappets in the conventional way.I have done this myself plus sold a couple of rocker shafts to people to do the same thing with no comeback.

Regards Trevor.

I've read this thread and as I understand it you can replace the hydraulic tappets with the rocker shaft Assembly from a 903cc Panda or Uno, Then set the tappets as for a Panda/Uno and hay pesto no more type writer sounds. :D

As I've had a problem with the Hydraulic ones and am still not happy with the net results this must be a cheaper way to go. (y)

can any one who has made this mod give me some feed back, as me Daughters Cento sounds worse .

Hydraulic tappets are self adjusting but non-hydraulic tappets will require adjustment to set the tappets on a car with eight valves you need to remember the number nine so to set number 3 turn the engine over until number 6 is compressed then adjust number 3 you can find the correct setting by checking number 2 while number 7 is compressed. Hope this helps mate :)

I presume the OP got his problem sorted some time in the last 5 years, and probably learned to stop shouting too.

Cheers

Hi

If you are getting hydraulic tappet problems, before lifting cam cover try adding proprietary tappet gum removal liquid to engine oil. leaving it running for 10 minutes, switching off, having a tea or non alcoholic beer and then restarting a quiet engine.

Then you burn rubber....

Has worked miracles for me, - on mazda.

Hi,

Could you tell me where I mite find proprietary tappet gum removal liquidas I have searched tintanet with no joy. My 899cc Seicento has 1 noisy tappet which is driving me up the wall so prior to setting the preload adjustments I will have a shot at the tappet liquid. Many Thanks

Noisy tappets! i reset my tappets by 'feel' as the clearance recommended in Haynes is about 0.05(which is really tight and I didn't want to risk overtightening, and problems as the engine warmed up), so they're now set at probably 0.1mm which is quite a gap, hence sowing machine sound! However, since replacing my petrol cap and maintaing the vacuum in the fuel system( when I remove the petrol cap there is a whoosh of vacuum),the tappets no longer rattle. I know the fuel system is very dependant on the vacuum: not sure if the vacuum affects what goes on under the rocker cover, but it has made a remarkable difference; sounds like a 'new' car! The vacuum seems to be most beneficial at about 1/4-1/3 tank of fuel. (y)

Noisy tappets are back this morning. Seems my theory was incorrect! Will have to set with the correct pre-load, but I'm concerned that tightening by 1 1/4 turns on the adjuster screw is a bit much, but I'll go with what Haynes book recommends. Obviously the noise must be due to having no pre-load set. Still the new fuel cap has got rid of the petrol smell.

OK what with the engine cold in the morning has an effect on the tappets? OIL!

as its cold the oil is thicker and its harder to get into places, so i would say give the car a good oil flush and new oil with filter to the correct level and see if that helps
