hi all

well i never seem to get a break from the car but im worried about the smell of fuel thats coming into the car. i cant find the reason for it, ive checked the fuel lines up to the tank, the tb and gaskets and it all looks fine to me with no obvious leaks anywhere  any ideas guys?

cheers

Possible fuel tank seams, has it had the tank campaign done/ is it applicable to your vehicle?

Hi, i had a similar problem with my cinq just after i bought it. This seemed to be linked to the infamous brake servo problem, whereby the diaghram inside fails, and allows fuel into the servo.....this happened to me about 3 days after i bought it, resulting in complete brake failure! I replaced the servo and since then its been fine. I have noticed on a couple of occassions when the tank is full and the weather is hot that it smells quite strong, but from what i have seen, it is merely venting from the breather next to the fuel cap and is not as bad as before the servo was replaced. If you have noticed any change in the braking performance of the car it could be related. I could be way off, but its a thought. Cheers.:slayer:

hi all

well after a week of smelling fuel ive finally found out what it is, i opened the bonnet this aft to replace a indicator bulb only to find a trail of fuel running down the front of the block so im thinking its the rocker gasket thats had it. I know how much people hate "bodges" on here but im broke atm so im going to try re-seal it with some gastite for the time being as im sure you will all agree 2 split cv boots and a gearbox with no oil in is more urgent?

thanks for all replies as usual!

cheers

i have a similar problem on my sei, the smell of fuel on hot days makes me feel ill after a while, i can see petrol on the ground when the car is parked in the wet or on a hill, but i cant find a leak anywhere!!!!! it seems to be nearer the engine its leaking, but the tank seems to be where the vapours are worst, ive checked the tank and it seems the centre seam is just starting to get a bit rusty, but isnt leaking, the fuel lines are fine and theres no sign of any leaks round the engine, its puzzling me where its comming from, according to the fiat dealer who is utterly useless, there is no leak (despite photograpic proof of puddles and trails of fuel) and even better no petrol fumes in the cabin!! (with their cheif technician sitting in the car saying this as i could smell the fumes from 5 feet away!) apparently its all in my head that im getting gassed by petrol and the puddles of fuel and all the splashes and trails of fuel along my route are all my immagination, along with my shocking fuel economy (£10 of fuel gives me about 40 miles), so thanks anyway arnold clark fiat in dundee, if you could have you would have reffered me to a psychiatrist rather than a mechanic, unless i payed £500 to get it looked at all the fuel system replaced of course!

i swung by my local independant i normally use and they agree that theres a horrific smell of fuel, they will be looking over it tomorrow as a matter of urgency:)

not just better service but their hourly rates are a third of the price, and the quality of the work has always been top notch!, i've decided i will not be buying a fiat 500 from ac in dundee as i will not give them the custom now or ever.

sorry for hijacking the thread a bit there, this whole petrol topic that is getting on my nerves as nobody seems to know or isnt willing to say what my problem is on my sei, hopefully youve found your problem before you get idiots like my local fiat dealer involved mate (y)

keep us informed of whether you've got it sorted :)

hi matey

you havent hijacked as much as added to it, your problem seems very similar to mine but im sure its the rocker gasket because the trail it leaves evaporates after a short while and leaves a little stained area but ill know more this weekend when i get to have a proper look at it. keep me posted on how you get on with your problem matey

That wont be it, unless there is something very, very wrong. it will be oil running down the front of the block, and it wont smell of fuel.

check all fuel hose connections, filler cap seal, flexi filler neck connections, wet patches on the tanks and the join were the filler neck goes into the tank.
Time to get the screw driver out and have a poke.and dont be worried to go,

hi mate

okay i was hoping it would be something straight forward when i saw the trail down the front of the engine (then again it never is straight forward with this car lol). just as a point of interest, i have had to swap the 2 tb's i have to make 1 working one, so im wondering if ive disturbed something while ive been doing that?

maybe one of the fuel lines to the TB (there is a feed and return) is leaking or has a pin hole from when you removed the factory clip and its squerting a little fuel across the cam cover which then drips down the block?

hi craig

just as you mention it the bloody car decides to start leaking oil out of the rocker cover (i was greeted by an oily engine this morning and it seems to be coming from the rocker cover). As a point of note the tappets started clattering this morning when i started it and went silent again after 20 seconds . i will check the pipes tomorrow but i have done a longish run today and its returned 63 miles so far from 15 quids worth of fuel and still has a quarter of a tank left so im pretty impressed by that (y) (motorway mileage mind you). last thing i wanted to say was how badly the speedo is wrong on mine! The needle went off the clock on my 899 lol but gps reported 87 mph as the top speed!.What a lovely little car to drive on the motorway, i was shocked at how well it rides and how solid the steering is at speed (well i do think 87 is a lot for the standard setup but ive been proved wrong). Im seriously thinking about getting a cinq sporting now :yum:.
cheers
