hi its my first post in this section.

ive got a problem with my sei and it overheats.

today i bought a new expansion tank lid and oil filler cap lid and a new fan switch

the car is a 1999 sei sporting, basicly the car just overheats and the fan doesnt kick in.

my boyfriend replaced the fan switch today and bled the system i think he done it right he turned on the engine and left the 2 bleed screws off and the water tank lid thing off and kept filling ti till no bubbles and the water flowed nice came out. then put the lid on and the screws in and the fan still doent come on.

i have my mot booked for monday any ideas he checked the fuse and its fine.

so so far new lid, bled the system and new fan switch. he checked the fan was working by putting wire in it and it came on so it does work.

If the fan works, and the switch works then it has to be the wiring. The fan should have 12 volts to one side of the motor connector and the other side is a switched earth through the fan switch. It's often the earth (negative) side which fails.

Get the tester out and watch your fingers on the fan blade!

my boyfriend joined the two pins together and made the fan come on and it sparked, so there must have been a ground?

Yep. If the fan system works but doesn't come on, then it;s because there's no water in the cooling system.

Time to get a compression test done.

No obvious water leaks?

i guess, but all the pipes are hot that are ment to be hot in the other thread. and when he changed the fan switch all the water in the system dumped out so water must be flowing in the rad?

its just weird that the fans not coming on

Yep. Something wierd is happening. Try running another earth from the grounded side of the fan switch -- could be that the contact just isn't good/permanent enough.

If the car is running fine (no overheating) when not in traffic, the fan side is responsible for the overheating.

we got the car delivered to us and it drove 20 miles without overheating going along, only when it sits it overheats.

i got the mot on monday i just really want the car to work :'(

It's deffo just the fan. If in a rush, an auto electrician should be able to sort it in 30mins.

hiya good news my tila (the secento) is all working perfectly fan and all looks like she'll make it to the mot i got a auto electrician in like you sugested (fingers99) it took him a while to figure it out but basically the previous owner has had some work done on it and the person who was supposed to be fixing it had broken it by cutting through the fan wire so the bloke rewired it all for me jods a gooden thanks fingers99
