General Replacing rear wheel bearings . . .

If it all falls apart when I take it off can I just put it back together & re-use? I'm confused 'cos it seems to re-assemble quite well?

they are only £15-£20 at a motor factors, if its fell to bits just go get a new one

the nut needs to be done up very tight, a bit of scafold poll on a beaker bar wih some one standing on the end tight

For the 1st time in quite a long time I am really skint  I can go get a new one but it will be cutting my OD limit really fine.

I just don't quite get why?

Do they not re-seal properly or something 'cos when I put it back together it looks fine?

When I put it back on do I use an amazingly tiny bit of lube on the shaft it slides onto - or am I getting something wrong? It was at that point that I tried pulling back off 'cos it wouldn't slide over, & at that point that it all cam apart in my hands :-(

Not that old, & the BBs look mint.

is just the bit of middle bearing coming out the back? if that all then just grease it up and hope for the best

Exactly that, just that no matter how much searching I did I couldn't see anyone refer to re-assembling them - always replacing :bang:

Usually have a mate who is an MOT tester & grew up around cars helping whenever I tackle stuff I can't quite get my head round, but He's off sailing!!!

It shouldn't just fall apart.

To me, this suggests that someone has tried to fit a replacement bearing and failed. Should be a press fit!

Bearings may look fine (they usually do). How do they feel?

Run smoothly enough once I've put back together from what I can tell. It is the BB race & the thing that holds it in that came out from inside the hub, think it was due to the "suction" of the layer of grease I had put onto the shaft, maybe I put on too much 'cos I couldn't just slip it back on?
