Technical Punto 75 mpi conversion

I think 8v still have aircon though, so 8v or 16v would have that belt..its best to ask, but i'd put money on 16v as still.

Mine was £450 i think, so thats a good price :) .... Aaron's price was the steal of the century :D!

Lot more work involved compared to 75 engine though!

the Punto75 manifold is not brilliant. I run a Punto75 engine in my Cinquecento. It has had head work done, and the inlet is port matched to the head - but at WOT above 4k, vacuum appears in the manifold. As the revs increase, as does the vacuum. Indicating a flow obstruction.

Anyhooooo, ive not compared it to a plastic manifold.. it might be better, or might not be don't know.

Injectors are high impendence, and the TB is heated by the coolant.

I have a plasic mani(i think everything is there) if you want to give it a try

I'd like to swap to a 1242 8v, but given that my 03 plate Sei Mpi is only about 29K old & I've owned her for almost all of that I'd been finding it hard to justify until the engine got older.

I have spotted a donor on Ebay advertised as only 384 miles Ebay Item # 350015873543

http://cgi.ebay.co.uk/ws/eBayISAPI....m=350015873543&ssPageName=STRK:MEWA:IT&ih=022

Waiting for a reply on the engine code for this one but BUT I have been told that there are only 2 types of mk2&3 1.2, 8v or 16v & I was given an engine code of 188A4.000 for the 8v?

Anyone spot any catches in using this as a donor as opposed to the 75?
I was planning to try using the existing Mpi parts as other people have described where possible so the lack of external bits shouldn't be such a big deal?

Anyone know what the difference could be in the bottom half of the engine compared to the 75? I was thinking that it was the gasket & therefore compression but with all the other differences being down to the Mpi top end which is entirely interchangeable with the Sei Mpi anyway?

Not sure about the CR. The 75 had a lumpier cam. The bottom end is likely to be the same as punto 60 and 75.

That engine won't have the tougher bottom end of the SuperFIRE or the higher CR (and trick gasket), but will be much easier to fit. The only issue will be elongating the horrible manifold as cat effort.

Already have a 75 Cam on the way for £40 'cos I'm probably gonna' do that soon either way.

As long as the bottom end is the same on the later 1.2 8v & the 75, & there won't be any donor parts I'd really miss if using my existing Mpi head I reckon I'll give it a go quite soon - I know it isn't a huge gain, but if skimmed & ported before fitting a little more displacement will be good :).

I've recently had to weld up the exhaust anyway - doesn't help that I often have to park on a muddy patch of grass so it gets a lot of dirty splashback. I have been considering buying a Supersprint manifold & sorting out a race cat anyway.

I am thinking of installing a new lightened 1.4 flywheel (don't fancy having my car off the road for too long waiting for the existing flywheel to be shrunk) & clutch when I reassemble - is the 1.4 a straight swap?

Am guessing the increased size of the friction surfaces doing the same job would mean it would be likely to last a little longer as well as handle more power? Not read up on what weight it can be lightened to?

You mean the 1.2? That one should be a straight swap. No real need to swap the clutch -- the stock one will be up to it, but the 1.4 one weighs the same. It should last longer in theory, but my guess is the release bearing will go before the clutch! Mine is being lightened as we speak! But I'm only fitting one to the 1242 in case I supercharge it.

Knew it wasn't a requirement to upgrade, suppose it would make sense to limit the number of things I spend ca$h on @ once - that way I'll have more money to spare on doing the exhaust @ the same time.

some pics coming up, got most of the engine in today, but the bottom pulley off my sei engine broke so going to be Wednesday before i can get the car on the road.

1 question for any of the of people who done this conversion. is the clearance for the standard air box and the bonnet ok. just i havent got a induction kit yet

looking good, just make sure you remove that coil pack cover.....it can cause premature failure, an I think it was even a FIAT bullitin to remove it.

Kristian

Not heard that one  How does it cause that?

Airbox- Not 100% sure but I know a novatech airbox wont fit and that was pretty much the same size as the std so wouldn't be suprised if it doesn't (n)
