The whole point about stressing the 'no load' part of the instruction is so that you don't end up with diesel where it shouldn't be. If you start burning it, you have bigger problems than tappet noise.
The engine uses shell bearings. These work by having a thin film of oil between them and the crank and block. The diesel is an oil, al be it a thin oil, sop you need oil pressure but not revving the engine. A constant speed is what is required.
