My Cinq has been leaking oil from the drive shaft seals (on both sides) for some time now and I finally bit the bullet and took it in to get it repaired this morning. I was just wondering if the gearbox oil is the same oil that lubricates the rest of the engine? In my old car the gearbox oil was seperate but I couldn't find a separate filler for the gearbox oil on my Cinq so I'm wondering if it's all the same oil? Just wanted to know to make sure all of the oil hasn't leaked out. It's a Cinq S 896cc OHV.

there is no filter on your gearbox, only autos have gearbox oil filters afaik.
gear oil is quite different too engine oil, best not mix them up :D

I had this problem a while ago, but it only happened on one side. The oil's very different to engine oil. You can buy it from Halfrauds etc. The drive shaft gater thing cost me £6, but the oil cost £18 from Halfrauds. It'll probably cost a lot more to get fitted though [V]

Yeah it stinks for a start.

I was advised my a Motor Factor to just do up the gaitor tightly with a cable tie (tie wrap), and then it was OK'd wih a mechanic mate of mine. Given the amount of oil in my gearbag atm (lots), they seem to be the only part of the GB that isnt leaking :)

There is a gearbag filler, but it don't look like an engine oil filler. Its a hex headed socket bolt, I think in the rear of the box. Its about half way up and indicateds the level. You open the filler and add oil until its coming back out the hole. This assumes the car is level. The oil is then at the correct level.

Gearbags use a hypoy oil which does not break down under crushing, ie going between gears. It is sticky smelly stuff, but does its job. There are a range of synthetics available which are expensive but superb.

Cheers

The gearbox oil filler is on the front of the gearbox. If you're standing in front of the car looking at the bonnet then the gearbox oil filler is to the right, just under the airbox (on the 899cc ones). I needed to run the oil down a small tube down to the hole, I don't think you'd be able to get the actually bottle down that far into the engine [V]

Cheers for the help guys - I'm picking up my little Cinq tonight. There was some work to do on the handbrake too (not really surprising), so with that plus 2 drive shaft seal replacements I'm expecting a hefty labour bill. :(
