I need to have power to the cigar lighter when the ignition is switched off in my 03 seicento. Can anyone advise how this can be done or do I need to fir a new socket with a live feed?
Thanks

Thanks, Is it staight forward to do? I need to power equipment when the ignition is off. I agree smoking stinks!
Many thanks,

remove switched feed, install permant feed via a fuse.

Thanks again,

It is a braking device when the car is towed on an A frame.

It might be better (just my two penny worth) to wire the supply to this in through a seperate, fused socket.

Two reasons for this:

1. I've never found the cigar lighters on Seis or Cinqs to give reliable power to anything (be it mp3 player, lead light, navigator) when attatched by a flexible lead: any vibration, bump, etc. is liable to break the connection.

2. Modern cigar lighters only work when the key is in place and turned because of a number of accidents involving kids playing with cigar lighters, some of which, I believe, were fatal.

yeah i used to do that...me mum used to go shopping and id sit in the car....i always ended up with a burnt finger, or melted trim:devil:

Thanks guys. Although the seic is under 750 kg actual kerb weight the MAM (maximum authorised weight) is 1200kg and apparently the law requires (as I have been lead to believe) it to be braked if it is over 750kg MAM. I am not sure how the MAM is calculated but it must include things like a driver, passenger, luggage and fuel. With the exception of fuel I will not be including the rest when towing! So it does seem that the law is an ass, but the car is a trailer when towed and so it is the MAM that is stated. Unless anyone knows different?

Yes you are right. This was discussed in a motor home forum a while ago as some owners were using an A frame all the time when they are supposed to be for only temporary use.

I think the only legally correct way of doing it was a trailer.

Cheers

D

It is legal the Dept of Transport has confirmed this after all it is still a trailer. There is a lot of debate about the weight factor among users and potential users most people think its the actual weight that counts but the DoT say it is the MAM, but they do emphasize that its only the courts who can decide and to my knowledge there has not been one yet.
