Hi,

I have a 1999 Sei, with a fuel tank that leaks from the passenger side seams.

Apparently this was subject to a recall but Fiat only exammined the tank for signs of leakage. It wasn't leaking at the time so nothing was done.

I do not know when the recall inspection was carried out because I have only owned the car for two years.

Does anyone know if I can get the tank changed by Fiat under the recall notice, The dealers first answer was "the recall work has been done so I have to pay for a new one"!, however he could not say when or where the work was done!

If the worst comes to the worst is it a big job to do myself? Has anyone got any tips?

Thanks

search the faq's on here or in your signiture below, you will find a thread about this. Certain VIN numbers fell within the recall, if yours falls between those given then you may be entitled to a free replacement PROVIDING the work hasnt been done before.

However the majority of owners seem to be able to get theres done FOC anyway

Thanks for the info.

I have found out that the car was inspected in 2005 and found to be OK so new fuel tank fitted.

It is now leaking badly but Fiat claim that the recall is no longer valid because an inspection was carried out!

Looks like I'll have to sort it myself

ive got a 2000 reg Sei Sporting and at my last MOT (April 2007) it was noted that fuel marks were evident around the seals in the Petrol tank (this was done by a non-Fial dealership). Would i be able to have a replacement fuel tank from FIAT f.o.c?

As Custard points out, 8 years, considering where it lives, isnt bad for a fuel tank. The recall was for premature failure of the tank.

Cheers

if my Sei falls within the vehicle ID number spec (which ive printed off from VOSA's website) then would it be worth going to Fiat and speaking to them?
the tank is not leaking as far as im aware (no holes etc), but the last MOT inspector did note that there were signs of leakage at seams.

My Fuel tank was completely corroding and Fiat it replaced with a brand new one free of charge. I wouldn't have noticed this otherwise, if it wasn't for the recall letter i recieved :D

Nothing ventured as they say.

Hi,

Thanks for the replies. Hopefully I have got a great outcome.

I contacted Fiat UK through "contact us" on their website, they spoke to the local dealer (Stoneacre Doncaster). They had carried out the original inspection, confirmed the tank was not replaced and Fiat UK have agreed to replace the tank FOC under the terms of the original recall. All I have to do is book it in with the dealer.

Really good news just before Cristmas!:)
